On Wilentz.

What do you think about Wilentz’s concept of “relentless unforeseen,”  that we do not know what our actions will lead to, and that throughout the 1776 period and the 1865 period, people white and black did not know that slavery would be abolished.  Yet it was.

Question:  do we have the power as human beings to make history, or does it just happen to us enforced by fate?

Hannah-Jones also believes that human beings make history.  One of her main points is that the work and deeds that the African American people, the effort to demand abolition of slavery and then equal rights, is an example of people acting in history to improve their lives and to create and contribute to the concept of freedom as something that human beings can achieve.  Nevertheless, they have been blocked by oppressive, reactionary forces.  But Hannah-Jones point is that people did this.

  1. I truly think that we all have the power as human beings to make history. History would not exist without us. Human beings are in power of every decision making. We have the power to choose what is good or bad and achieve everything we want even though we may be blocked by some stronger and oppressive forces, which does not stop us from trying to fight and do well. Sometimes, we do things unconsciously without worrying too much about the upcoming consequences, which can be good or bad. Things that we generally do not expect are the ones that end up happening sooner or later.

    It is true that white and black people were not expecting slavery to be abolished. They did not see it coming, but someone had to do something in order to end slavery and improve lives of plenty other people. To me, waiting patiently for things to be done by themselves or colonists to change their minds and grant equal rights to everyone would not really solve problems. People have to stand for what they want to be changed by society. We all can not think the same way or understand things from other people’s perspectives and point of views, but this does not change the fact that we all are the founder of history. We are responsible of writing it the way we want it to be, so let try to make it get better every single day.

    We do have the power to make history. History is more than just the living record of nations, leaders, and wars. it is our story that is being told . It can be how someone stood up for what they believed in, or died for love, or worked hard to make their dreams come true. All of those things are concepts we can relate to.
