- Two key concepts in this video are the means of production and labor. In your comment, explain how you understand the means of production and labor. Give an example of each.
- Another important concept in understanding social class is value. Based on the ideas presented in Video 5.1, what is value? What give “value” to value, what makes something valuable?

So, we’ve encountered three different overviews of what ideology is, but let’s organize our own thinking about it. In this discussion board, think about and comment on the following questions:
1. Keeping in mind the material covered in this lesson, describe how you understand ideology in your own words.
Hint: One way to approach this is as follows
a) Describe what ideology is in a brief paragraph (in your own words).
b) Give an example illustrating what you wrote in (a).
c) Write another paragraph (or two), explaining to your reader with additional details, how you understand ideology.
2. How do you understand the difference between conservative and liberal ideology in US politics? What seem to be the big differences, the dividing line? Given an example to backup your arguments.
Hint: try to identify key words (concepts) that play a big role in making someone consider themselves to be liberal or conservative. Then, explain in your own words what those keywords (concepts) mean.
3. How do you understand Althusser’s definition of ideology? Paraphrase it in your own words. Given an example. Hint: you may have to watch the second video again, and find the few places where Althusser’s position is presented.
Hint: Remember, the discussion boards are crucial for us this semester, because they reproduce our in-class conversations. Try to be thorough and write more, rather than less. I will do the same, and make sure by the time we end our discussion, we have covered the key ideas on the module.

Video Participation:
You are not required to participate in any class-related video activities. However, throughout the semester, I may hold optional Zoom meetings, where I host a Question & Answer meetings, mostly likely after a few modules have been presented. Such optional QA Zoom sessions will also be held before exams (to answer your questions, as well as review specific points). Note, again, you are encouraged to attend these Zoom meetings, but you will not be required to do so, your attendance of these video meetings is optional. All such Zoom meetings will be recorded and made available on our class website for everyone to watch, whenever convenient.
Difficulties with Technology:
You must have a plan for dealing with technical difficulties. It is your responsibility if internet goes out in the middle of submitting an assignment. It is your responsibility to find alternate ways to access content (campus Learning Center offers internet and computers). - 50% Exams (25% Midterm and 25% Final Exam)
- 30% Discussion Board Responses (this represents class discussion and is key for success in this class). Note, I will actively facilitate discussion on discussion boards, which will include giving regular feedback to student responses.
- 10% Response Papers (these are essentially essays, responding to questions that appear at the end of modules. As such, they serve as reviews for the exams).
- 10% Quizzes (5% for each of the two quizzes)

College Attendance Policy
At BMCC, the maximum number of absences is limited to one more hour than the number of hours a class meets in one week. For example, you may be enrolled in a six-hour class. In that class, you would be allowed 7 hours of absence (not class days). In the case of excessive absences, the instructor has the option to lower the grade or assign an F or WU grade
Note: a student has to be active, not just visit, an online course in order to be considered in attendance. Attendance affects student aid, and is reported as required by law.
