Vanessa Gutierrez- Class Identity

1. The distinction between owners and employees is that owners have a business and gain profit when employees give their labor to them. To keep the wealth going for them even though they are stock holders as well.

2. Everyone has a role and function in society, and we all can compare our work, but we are all helping each other. Surviving as a community to fulfill each other’s need,s even if that means working for others.

3. I do understand it might not just be an identity because the world is always changing. How much you are gaining right now and a year from now, the value changes; there’s always more to what it seems. Being in the working class comes with how you fit into this grid of who makes profit and survives capitalism.

Vanessa Gutierrez – Money per Year made

1. The similarities of the readings show how each person classified by how much they make can impact daily activities, such as obtaining an education, and what neighborhood you live in can impact your safety. The differences are seeing how different stations stay being lowered income, and some stay wealthy because of people’s needs, because of where they are in life and the need to build up to maybe hopefully be in the middle class, but the need to start somewhere.

2. I’m not surprised, but I also think it should be updated to this time because even though communities might change due to gentrification. My area has become more centered on Hispanics and crowded, and due to this, it becomes harder to function. With more people coming together means we are a part of the lower working class and struggling to survive. I can’t even imagine surviving in the wealthy areas.

3. Yes, the wealthy stay together, and it shows in how the neighborhood looks, where people have their own place, but it looks more luxurious. The neighborhood looks cleaner, and there aren’t reports of crimes on the citizen app. Whereas in the lower working class, you see more worn-down buildings with multiple apartments together. Such as the projects and the train stations that are more populated in the morning due to more people living there, because it takes more than one person to fulfill the rent.

Vanessa Gutierrez- Force or Persuasion

1. Repressive State Apparatuses is using force, such as the police, military, courts, and prisons to enforce the rules of society on people who don’t follow norms and do things that harm the community. Force is used to enforce that we stay in line and not rebel.

    2. Unlike repressive, Ideological State Apparatuses work on persuading people to become a part of society’s norms. Environments we see every day, such as schools, churches, and social media, shape how we view our own opinions and what we follow. Having this obedience to follow beliefs without force is how ideological state apparatuses work.

    3. Repressive and ideological state apparatuses are different because repressive use force, such as prisons, law enforcement, and judges, to control people to stay in line and be obedient in society. Whereas ideological, it is using their beliefs, such as church, school, to pique people’s interest to fulfill their role by fulfilling the facility’s needs. Without question, because they believe in it and it became a norm in society.

    4. An example of an Ideological State Apparatus is in Church, they tell you if you did not complete your sacraments, you don’t have a place in heaven. Implying that it is a priority because everyone else has done it, and makes you feel like you need to do it as well. Wanting to stay true to our beliefs and feel like we belong in the community by relating to others is how a society gets influenced to stay obedient.

    Vanessa Gutierrez- Options of Ideaology

    1. Ideology is a set of beliefs that affect our opinion on politics because It affects different categories such as freedom, justice, and equality. This shows what party we become, whether it is democratic or republican or something else. Yet the ideology we come up on our own is how we educate ourselves and make aware what needs we need in life and how the governments choices and who we elect affect us daily.

    2. The difference between a conservative and liberal ideology is having a smaller government that wont restrict them is ideal. Where for liberals having equality for everyone to survive especially because people of color usually join liberals due to poverty. Where as conservative usually prioritize their religion and don’t accept the new and unknown such as labels like same sex.

    3. Althusser’s definition of ideology is that people want to fit into society and do it without knowing. People then become part of a functioning capitalist system because they don’t want to be isolated. Then, out of fear that there will be consequences if you don’t follow the rules. Things that we see every day, such as school, where we are told to do our homework and not be disruptive in class or you will get in detention, show that we naturally fall in line to be obedient or there will be consequences and others will see you different for acting out of line. Just like how in real life there are prisons to correct adults. Staying obiedent and not rebelling is ideal so that voting every four years picking between trash and trash becomes the norm.

Vanessa Gutierrez- The desperation for control.

    1. To find another way to survive because they couldn’t do slavery anymore. Southern conservatives gathered together to rally up others to point out the bad and highlight that there shouldn’t be chaos and things should go back to the way they were peacefully. Obviously, to point out that the minorities are only bringing problems and not wanting to accept the new change of laws, even though activists have been fighting for well over 50 years.
2.Yes, it still influences to this day because with every election, highlighting that crimes have gone up tremendously now that minorities can do everything. Yet they don’t think that with the proper resources and foundation that there wouldn’t be crimes. Yet they highlight in elections what minorities are doing wrong to say that they are peaceful, and there needs to be control to keep white supremacy alive.

    Vanessa Gutierrez- Crimes or Ego?

1.Alexander says its deeply wrong because it locks them into a caste system forever just like the Jim Crow laws. That even some people who have family that have felonies on their record are impacted even if they don’t have any crime record. As the Jim crows were being thrown away the government could only laugh nervously about incarcerating black and brown due to their disparity. They are covering up and taking something that is seen as bad in society because the government/ conservatives don’t feel in control.
    2. Racial disparites cannot be explained by drug rate crimes because all people of color were doing the same amount of drugs because it was more accessible.
    3. I understand this phrase as while other countries were declining in incarceration United States went 4 times higher because of different motivations to control the minority.
