Taikeim Jennings- Views on Ideology

  1. To me ideology is the way that people or a group of people react within their own group and how they react with other groups. There are many different types of ideologies. One of the ideologies that we see and is very common is in today’s political groups. When we think about the political parties in today’s society they are usually broken down into two parts. There are conservatives and then you have liberals as well. To have a conserative ideology you believe that we should do away with government regulation of business and take more of a hands off approach. You also believe that the government should stop with hands out unless those handouts are a benefit for you. You feel that the reason why there are poor people in this country is because they’re lazy and rather have the government give them a handout then.
Additional detail that I have learned about ideology is that we don’t realize that we are conditioned to these views. The reason why I said this is because we are conditioned to do a lot of things. We are told that we must follow the rules or that we must believe the views that we were taught to believe regardless if they are true or not. Conservatie pass on their views to their children and so on and so on. While liberals do the same and we don’t see that we are in the cycle of ideology that will never change.

  1. A conservative ideology believes that the government should have less control over what matters they involve themselves in. They believe that we need to have anti abortion laws and that religion should be a big role in schools. While if you see yourself falling into the category of a liberal ideology view then you believe that we need to push for helping the poor and support bills that will push for change. The biggest difference between conservatives and liberals ideologies is that they both are on the far side of what they believe the government should and shouldn’t do. A prime example of this is a conservative standpoint that believes that the government should not give hand outs unless they are the ones being helped. If the government is bailing out a big corporate company that is losing funding then that is okay. But if the government is helping the poor then it becomes a problem. On the liberal side they believe that the government should help out the poor and make changes to the economy that would help bring people that are poor out of poverty.
  1. He believes that the idea of ideology is looking at how a group of people act and what makes these people choose to act the way that they do. A prime example that he uses in the video is the idea of what it means to be in school. Althusser view on school is that no other ideology is able to have this type of control that schools hold over their students. They spend eight hours a day for five to six days. When you attend school you are  being taught to learn, read, write and add. But what tops all of this is that you have to follow the discipline or rules that are given to you. You spend seven to eight hours a day going from class to class that is broken down into one hour sections. They teach you that you must listen to authority, you need to obey and can’t speak out of terms. Every action is being ruled over by the teacher in the room. And when you don’t listen you have to deal with the threat of “violence”. You can be kicked out of the class, your parents will be called or you may even get detention. In doing this you don’t realize that you are being taught to be a submissive and obedient member of the capitalist system. You are being taught to respect authority, your classmates and submit your homework and assignments on time. If you don’t learn how to do that now, as you become an adult you can possibly see yourself subject to going to jail. Thus the purpose of school is just as much as the social and economic order as it’s to learn to read and write. You are pushed to accept authority and you are scared of the violence that will become. And if a teacher does not do the job of keeping their classroom in order then they will get into trouble with their boss.

Taikiem Jennings- Southern Strategy influence of American politics

  1. I believe that southern racist politicians choose to frame their defense with the usage of “law and order” because they felt that it would make them popular among working class white people to fight black people during the civil rights movement.  President Nixon would argue that they need to face the fact the whole problem is due to people of color. And in order to fix the system is to take a stand and make a change (Page 43-44). They knew by framing the problems on people of color that they would be able to appeal to people that were fed up with the Civil Rights movement.
  1. I believe that this is a huge influence on American politics because there are many people that still think like this. In Alexander’s article she talks about how southern conservatives Republicans believe that a new Republican party could be built based on angry white Democratic party members due to the rights of what occurred during the Civil Rights Movement (Page 43-44). The reason why this is still occurring in today’s American politics is because during the 2016 Presidential election we saw former President Trump use these same types of views to gain control over his voters and gain the votes needed to win. He ran on the motto of “Make America Great Again” and wanted to build a wall to block immigrants from crossing the border. Just like these racist politicians they believe that they could make a new party due to the angry southern democratic feeling that they were left out of their party while they fought for the rights of people of color.

Taikiem Jennings- Views on why so many people are send to jail

  1. The mainstream argument says that due to the war on drugs the racial disparities in drug conviction and sentences reflect nothing more than the government’s zealous efforts to address rampant drug use in poor minority communities. This is not correct at all. The real reason for this is because President Ronald Regan had not launched his response to the issue of crack cocaine until 1928, well before crack became an issue in the media or an issue within the black community.
  2. Studies show that people of all races use and sell drugs at similar rates. But studies also show that white people, particularly white youths are more likely to be connected with drug crimes than a person of color. But you would not know this due to the fact that jails and prisons are overflowing with black and brown drug offenders.
