Question 1

Faction which means a conflict of interest within an organization, normally caused by a select few with a group, this reminds me of societal structures

Question 2

The source of wealth according the federalist is derived from the diversity in the faculties of men, here reference is being made to men who posses power. “The diversity in the faculties of men, from which the rights of property originate, is not less an insuperable obstacle to a uniformity of interests.” The factors which explains why some people possess wealth and by owning property and others remain poor is central to the fact that government serves to preserve the interest of those who have wealth, and power and to prevent those without from attaining such or encroaching on those who do. This is clearly stated by James Madison who wrote “The protection of these faculties is the first object of government. From the protection of different and unequal faculties of acquiring property, the possession of different degrees and kinds of property immediately results; and from the influence of these on the sentiments and views of the respective proprietors, ensues a division of the society into different interests and parties.”

Question 3

I am somewhat in agreement with this definition of wealth and poverty, this as in said era your position and by extension what could do in society were affected by said economic markers. If you did not posses land or great wealth you weren’t allowed to run for political office or even vote. What I do not agree with is the manner is which wealth was gained and maintained, and the methods employed to prevent the equal distribution of said wealth, and that the government was responsible for preventing such.

Question 4

The core mission of the US government in simple terms is to protect the rich man’s wealth or make them richer and make the poor even poorer or prevent the poor from acquiring any wealth. This is not surprising to me as the same methods are being employed even today in more subtle and sometimes blatant terms. For example, the tax plan enacted by former president Trump which enriched the top 1 percent and took way more from those in the middle and lower class. Another example is the vote grabbing promises and policies promised on political platforms by office hopefuls, only to do a complete 360 when elected, mainly because said policies would affect the wealth of their political donors.

Question 5

Democracy in its truest form means “of the people by the people” and elected officials are placed in positions to promote the interests of their constituents. Democracy is concerned with addressing social issues and the active participation of all citizens. I am not surprised that Federalist#10 is not in favor democracy as doing so would man that they would have to share their wealth and attend to the needs of constituents.

Discussion 6.2

Question 1

The term faction reminds me of separation of classes.

Question 2

The source of wealth originates from different diversities and the interests of men. This includes their ability to invest or seek convincing opportunities. These are the factors that determine an individual’s path accumulating path.

Question 3

I don’t agree with this explanation in terms of wealth and poverty. I believe that wealth is defined by individual hard work and interest to learn. However, in upper-middle-class families, the children tend to inherit wealth from their parents.

Question 4

The core mission “first object” of the US government involves understanding the diversity in the faculties of men. This is interesting and surprising given that our society today is rotten with corruption and the accumulation of wealth through unlawful means.

Question 5

I believe the author dislikes the (pure) democratic form of government with the basis of the existing facts on the separation of classes and relative influence on politics. The politicians believe that pure democracy will facilitate equality in the distribution of wealth and resources in society, an aspect that does not apply.

Discussion Board 6.2

  1. What concept that we have already discussed does “faction” remind you of?
  2. According to Federalist #10 (written by James Madison), what is the source of wealth (private property)? What factor explains why some people get to possess wealth by owning private property, and others don’t (thus remaining poor)? This is a key question, because it shows how the authors of the Constitution thought about the difference between different classes of Americans! HINT: focus on the passage that begins: “The diversity in the faculties (WHAT DOES FACULTIES mean or refer to?) of men, from which the rights of property originate, is not les….”
  3. Do you agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty?
  4. What is the core mission (“first object”) of the US government? Does this surprise you, does it sound different from what our society today seems to suggest the core mission of the government is? Explain.
  5. Given the discussion in questions 1-4, are you surprised that Federalist #10 is not in favor of democracy, and supports a Republican (representative) form of government? Why would d the author dislike a (pure) democratic form of government? Hint: think about how this question connects with the social classes…
