1. Why do think Southern racist politicians choose to frame their defense of racial segregation through the language of “law and order”? What special advantages was this choice of words going to give them?
I believe that this was a perfect game played by those politicians in their try to cover their actual intention of racism against black people. By using the language of “law and order” they were trying to not portray what they were really doing that was discriminating against the black community. They used this language as a language of oppression too. To me, a form to maintain black without rights and identity. They also used those words to accuse blacks of a lot of crimes by saying that they were breaking the “law and order.” However, the only thing that black were doing was fighting for the approval of their rights. As it is mentioned in the article “Southern governors and law enforcement officials often characterized these tactics as criminal and argued that the rise of the Civil Rights Movement was indicative of a breakdown of law and order.” (p 40). As we can see on this quote, every movement that people from the black communities did was immediately cataloged as a “crime” or something that was against the law.
2. Do you think the Southern Strategy is still influencing America?
Of course yes. I believe that although the treatment against black has become better with time in the United States, there is still a lot of discrimination going on. We can see that in the police brutality against blacks. We can also mention the fact that segregation is still a thing today in our country. It is not a secret that black communities are the same ones that have poor education districts. In the same way, jails are overcrowded with black “criminals” that are there just because they couldn’t afford their bail, that is because our criminal justice system is built against them.
