Okay, let ‘s go to the questions, consider the following:

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here. Give an example.

2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

3. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

4. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work. I’ll start us of off by giving an example.

    Repressive State Apparatus:
A repressive state apparatus is when the government uses force to control people. Althusser calls it “repressive” because it’s about using power and control. For example, the police or military are part of the repressive state apparatus because they use force to make people follow the rules.

    Ideological State Apparatuses:
Ideological state apparatuses are about shaping how people think and behave through ideas and beliefs. They include things like schools, media, and religion. Instead of force, they influence people’s thoughts and feelings to make them support certain ideas or ways of doing things.

Difference between Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses:
Repressive state apparatuses use force, like police or military, to control people. Ideological state apparatuses influence people’s thoughts and beliefs through things like education and media. So, one uses force, while the other uses ideas to control people.

    Example of Ideology:
Example: A political ad saying that lower taxes will make everyone better off.
Explanation: This ad is an example of ideology at work. It’s trying to convince people that lower taxes are good for the economy. It doesn’t use force, but it tries to shape how people think about taxes and the economy. This is the work of an ideological state apparatus.

  2. 1) A repressive state apparatus are people like the army, the police, the judiciary and the prison system. The state basically has the physical power to make you behave with these things. This is why he calls it repressive.
    2) Ideological state apparatuses use different things than just violence to make people behave. They might use social media, schools and churches. Things that people love or need so it can work in their favor.
    3) The main difference between the two are ideological state apparatuses uses ideology to make people behave. They use the reality of the real world. While Repressive state apparatus use violence to get what they want.
