We invite you to join your colleagues who are creating space for students as knowledge creators as they incorporate open pedagogy into their courses!
Building on the open educational resources (OER) movement, open pedagogy engages students as knowledge creators, often in open, public venues, creating spaces for students to enact their agency in learning and co-creating learning experiences with instructors. Student work moves from “disposable assignments” with an audience of one, the instructor, to lasting renewable assignments with a broader audience. Examples include:
- public writing assignments
- students editing Wikipedia articles
- writing for public blogs (see examples in art history, music (with instructor video), and English)
- multimedia assigments
- recording audio or podcasts made available on the BMCC OpenLab (see Podcasting as Pedagogy and Podcasting History as an Alternative Assignment)
- writing and publishing zines distributed through the Library (see student zine examples)
In this seminar, participants will design an open pedagogy assignment. Activities will include pedagogical conversations with peers and faculty mentors on Zoom, as well as asynchronous activities such as readings and reflections. NOTE: The first session on Tuesday, June 3 will be held in person on campus. The remaining sessions will be held online. Zoom sessions will take place on Tuesdays (June 10, 17, 24) and Thursdays (June 5, 12, 26 – no meeting on Juneteenth), 1 – 2:30 pm.
Apply by Monday, May 5, at 5 pm, using this application form. Faculty selected to participate will receive a $500 stipend for creating an open pedagogy assignment for one of their courses.
We welcome faculty who have participated in this seminar in the past to apply again, but we are unable to provide a stipend to repeat attendees unless you are creating a different assignment.
