AI-resistant Open Assignment Design – June 2026

We invite you to join your colleagues who are creating space for students as knowledge holders and creators as they incorporate open education practices into their courses!

Building on the open educational resources (OER) movement, open pedagogy engages students as knowledge creators, often in open, public venues, creating spaces for students to enact agency in their own learning and co-creating learning experiences with instructors. Student work moves from “disposable assignments” with an audience of one, the instructor, to lasting renewable assignments with a broader audience. Examples include:

Public writing assignments:

Multimedia assignments:

In this seminar, participants will design an open assignment. Activities will include pedagogical conversations with peers and faculty mentors on Zoom, as well as asynchronous activities such as readings and reflections. Zoom sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June, 10:00 – 11:30 am. Applicants should be available on:

  • Week 1: June 2 and 4
  • Week 2: June 9 and 11
  • Week 3: June 16 and 18
  • Week 4: June 23 and 25

Apply by Monday, April 20, at 5 pm, using this application form. Faculty selected to participate will receive a $1,000 stipend for creating an open assignment for one of their courses.

This seminar is part of the ongoing open education initiative at both CUNY and SUNY funded by the NYS Education Department.
