Hi afternoon folks,
Thanks for all the great resources you directed our attention to in today’s discussion about fair use and copyright.
Take a look at this explainer of the copyright symbol itself, which provides some important formal and legal context to our discussion.
Kudos to Erica for providing a link to this Stanford Libraries Measuring Fair Use guide, which complements the Columbia Fair Use Checklist quite well. Erica also directed us to this funny tweet regarding Bill Murray’s unlawful use of a Doobie Brothers song to advertise his line of golf shirts.
Related to our discussion about creators sometimes running afoul of copyright claims on their own creations, have a look at this bizarre situation in 2021 where Metallica, who livestreamed on the streaming platform Twitch.tv, had their live performance automatically censored and replaced with placeholder music.
See you next week, and have a Happy Juneteenth!

To the above I want to add a couple resources that came up in the Wednesday 6/12 discussion in the Open Pedagogy seminar.
I often refer to the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use in the Visual Arts from the College Art Association.
And jean called our attention to a list of similar Best Practice Guides to Fair Use.
