I teach film studies. I very interested in effective teaching strategies as I used to be a HS Principal (Van Arsdale HS in the BK). I’m looking forward to some Outrigger Canoe races, maybe a surf trip to El Salvador, and seeing Wilco. I’m currently reading Going Going Gone a sci fi baseball novel. Super fun. Next on my list is man of ashes – memoir of a holocaust survivor. the book was given to me by the grandson of the writer who i met at an outrigger canoe race. It’s my honor to be able to pay forward my tech sector talents and experiences to BMCC-CUNY students as an Adjunct Lecturer. I teach MAR 300 Sales Principles and Practices (w/ Salesforce). —— As is the case for many of you the past 3 years (technically 2.5 since 2022 is still in the making) have been transformational. Little did I know that my first semester as an Adjunct at BMCC (preparing students to enter the various arenas of work that I occupy and have navigated in the past) would gift me with a unique lens with which to temper so much of the heartache and heartbreak that I, and everyone around me, have had ample supply of. 6 months prior I had big dreams for this course, and a big sense of responsibility to do well by the honor of the invitation to contribute to the body of work offered by so many excellent tenured and other adjunct faculty. The reality check of my first academic year though was to ‘slow my roll’ and pace my own growth. It was best to target incremental improvements as I found structures, rhythms, plus routines that worked; and while I learned the in’s and out’s of navigating the institution of BMCC on behalf of my students or myself; rather than burn out in attempting to realize my full vision for the course all at once. SO…NOW, I’m super excited to put the rubber to the road for this first crucial aspect of the big dreams I’ve had for this class. I’m ready to shake off my textbook dependency and see how this step it nourishes and nurtures the other aspects of the dreams I’ve been holding for the impact that this class is capable of making, and especially how that impact gets made. The other gifts of these past 3 years: *Completion of a Mindfulness Teacher Training Certification via Tibet House in cooperation with Dharma Moon. * a lot of luck and grace – cultivated from years prior – to serve as an experienced professional within and the Salesforce Ecosystem as a Business Analyst and Salesforce Administrator. * an unexpectedly surfaced or found community of like-focused and accomplished cohort of supporters who help me test, adjust, lower or raise expectations of myself, the systems at play, and what I believe is possible for my students. * The opportunity to be here, now. If you’ve read this far, THANK YOU for your curiosity!

Greetings All, I’m excited to learn more about OER to make learning more accessible to my students. I plan to incorporate the resources I learn in to the African American History course I teach here at BMCC. This summer. I’m re-reading Small Teaching by James L. Lang & I just started The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown.
Mechellé Grayson
My name is Mechellé Grayson and I’ve been teaching MAR 100 since Fall 2019. Spring 2020, I’ve seen the perseverance and resilience of our students in spite of it being a global pandemic. It made me a more compassionate and empathetic teacher and educator. I noticed that one of the challenges my students face are getting the required text for my class. I would love to include more OLR to help students overcome that challenge.

I have been teaching MUS 102 for eight semesters at BMCC, and I have found the cost of the textbook to be prohibitive for some of the students. I would like to explore other options to help them succeed. This summer I will be visiting our family and friends in Europe with my husband, two kids and mom.

I am interested in learning to use OER/ZTC course design in my Bus 200 classes. The savings to the student’s cost for a Textbook will relieve one of the many challenges they already encounter pursuing higher education. Summer 2022 is time spent with family and friends. Trips to Florida, East Hamptons, and Switzerland for good food and fine wine.
Robert Greer
My name is Robert Greer and I have taught in the CIS department since the earliest days of IBM PCs — a few years before the college moved to 199 Chambers Street! My undergraduate degree was a double major in music and electrical engineering from MIT, and my graduate study in drama: MFA program in directing at Emerson, Scandinavian studies at Columbia, the CUNY Classics Institute and PhD program in theatre. My “Strindberg Rep” is resident company at Theater for the New City. My fiancée Natalie Menna is resident playwright there, as well as Strindberg Rep’s leading lady (I translate and direct.) I have always wanted to learn about additional educational resources that can complement or add to courses I am teaching. I would also want to learn other ways in building courses on blackboard that is useful and helpful for students.

I am interested in learning the advanced technology that I can use to improve my online teaching. Since pandemic, online teaching with OER has become so effective and efficient for me to teach online math courses. I would like to do my best to help student success. I like to ride my bicycle along the Hudson Rive bike paths. I like to walk in the Central Park to embrace the nature. I like to go shopping in supermarkets in Flushing. I like to cook Asian food at home. I like to watch movies in YouTube. I like to chat with my BMCC friends by FaceTime.

I am always interested in learning how I can do something better. In this instance, it is about learning how my courses can be more impactful for my students with the learning process. Therefore, I am open for my learning new skills that can benefit my pedagogy and my students. I have a few day trips planned. I am going to the Barnes Museum in Philadelphia. I will spend a day at Duke Farms in Hillsborough, NJ and we will drive up to Culinary Institute for lunch and Dinner. I will also spend a long weekend in Lenox, Massachusetts with a friend from college. Currently reading David Balducci and Harlan Coben.

I have created courses previously using OER and alternate materials, but the course I am focusing on this time is daunting. I am excited to connect with folks who are working on this . Creating community.

Hello! I just started working with jean this spring, and I’ve also been working with the Office of Library Services to launch CUNY’s Pressbooks installation. After working for many years in educational publishing I am glad now for the ways that working with OER brings me into communities of educators and learners, like this one. Among the books I am looking forward to reading this summer are Either/Or by Elif Batuman, the sequel to The Idiot, and Peach Blossom Spring by Melissa Fu, a debut novel by an old friend of mine.

Hi there! As most of you know, I’m the open knowledge librarian here at BMCC, and this I believe . . . Knowledge is a public good and a human right. We need to continually develop and defend the knowledge commons so that every human being has access to humanity’s accumulated knowledge. I strive to create spaces that celebrate, spark, and engage the potential of every human being to create knowledge. So many of our students have been taught to be knowledge consumers; at BMCC, they can learn to claim space and raise their voices up as knowledge creators. My summer book list is too long to include! But I’m very much looking forward to N.K. Jemison’s Broken Earth Trilogy (how have I not read this already?!?). So happy to be in community with everyone here and look forward to learning with you!
