MMP 270: Introduction to Video Game Design
BMCC Spring 2022
These are my animations for my player character. I did not feel comfortable drawing animations so I rigged a character in after effects so that I can keep consistent animations throughout.
My biggest source of inspiration is the Chimera from greek myth, especially the depiction of it in the God of War franchise. I’ve always appreciated designs that are a combination of different creatures.
Avatar: The Last Airbender also had creatures that were a mishmash, which was always cool to see.
Another class I am currently taking had me design a creature of this sort as well, which I also thought to utilize for this game, but decided against it because I wanted to try something else, although these sketches for that did aid me in this design.
These are my sketches of the chimera, I already had a specific design in mind so mainly focused on proportions. I also experimented with it in a style I often do with white paint on black background, which forces me to keep shading in mind, and although I didn’t complete the form I feel comfortable in translating it into 2D animation.

These are what my character animations look like, still need to add more frames and trying to fix the animation so it matches properly.
Initially, I was going to choose a style like in Hylics or Psychonauts for my game. Though I find these designs great, neither of them were going to fit with my game.
I took inspiration from Darkest Dungeon (so much for avoiding horror), trying the “squashed” proportions while keeping the sense of doom.
In terms of this design, I was looking into occult magic in Africa, and came across the fact there are many tribes in Cameroon that use spiders and crabs for divination (fortune telling).
These are my animation sprite sheets.
Here’s the character in my Godot scene:
Inspirations:
-Animal crossing characters- (first sketch)
Cute animal crossing villagers who look kind of creepy but also very cute.
-Lisa the painful & amnesia monster- (second sketch)
this inspiration goes more towards a horror game from the grotesque creatures images.
-Lilys well & little nightmares- (third sketch)
Body horror, gives off a feeling of uneasiness.
-Each of the design inspirations supposed to give off a different type of feeling, from creepy cute, to horrific, and or scary/mysterious.
-Character design variations:
