The character design for my character was based on the style of my favorite two video game characters; Mario and Kirby.
This is my main character, Max. He is a boy who lives for adventure and the outdoors, no matter how many monsters he runs into, he never stops having fun. These are three different three variations of him.
I’ve tried to teach myself Godot in the past, with mixed results, but the lab video does a good job of explaining all the things I’d normally just type and move past without ever understanding! It’s still a bit confusing, but the pieces are starting to click together. I also really appreciate the auto-filling in Godot and the (relatively) easy to learn language.
Because I did this first, before any of the art labs, I used the provided assets. But I’d like to do some of the art labs and then double-back to programming so I can use my own art.
The first game character I had inspiration from was from Kid Cobra. He’s a fighting character from the game called ARMS. The parts I like about him is his purple color scheme, but also the unique design on his mask that covers his face. This will soon inspire my characters color scheme.
The second inspiration I took from was from Splatoon’s Inklings and Octolings. While thinking of a concept for my character, I thought , “Why not make them art related?”. So this inspired the bit of concept for my character, but also the customization of clothing, in this case the mask, is also utilized in my design.
Lastly, the character I took inspiration from was Nagito Komaeda from Danganronpa. No, not his personality, but the kind of coat design he has interested me the most. I also have experience drawing in the Danganronpa art style, so initially, when creating my character, I had this style in mind.
Finally, here is my character designs for my game!. This is Robin, a spray painter, he roams around the city vandalizing walls in alleyways and on abandoned buildings to express his thoughts and feelings to the public. For some variations I only changed his color scheme. From left to right, The left design was his original color scheme that is posted below, though his design was simplified more than the original design I made, the middle design is a color scheme on how I tried to use Nagito’s color palette with my own twist, and the right color scheme is a color scheme based off of my 3 favorite colors.
As a fun fact about Robin, based on his design, he’s mostly poor, having patches and stitches on his coat to show that.
Here is Robin’s Main design that I had to simplify for this project. It was premade a while back and I wanted to use it for something. (Personally, I prefer this design better, but it would be hard to make this into a pixel sprite.)
After watch the Programming Intro video, I begin understand how the programming engine works, especially since I previously learn Python, HTML, CSS and JavaScript and understand how variables work and the different types of data types like “Strings” are Text Types, integers are whole numbers and Booleans are only true and or false. I’m hoping to learn more as I continue to learn how to add 2d collisions and physics to my character
I was really impressed at how meta the author was making the comic sound. He really twisted my brain a bit with the “Pipe or Pipe to be or Pipe not to be” analogy haha
The author was being very descriptive with everything we were seeing we were seeing. A perfect example for reference is on page 27 when he says; “This is paper, This is INK on paper”. Things we know of but don’t really stop to acknowledge.
“The images we use to represent concepts, ideas, and philosophies.” “Icons of the practical realm.” “And finally, Icons we call pictures: images designed to actually resemble their subjects.” If you were to stop and broke down the things you look around you and think of the pre-determined perception you see ’em with… YOU’D BE AMAZED!
I was inspired by the character designs in Brawhalla which is the game I love playing it.
I chose some basics shapes like triangles, circles, and rectangles to create my character designs, and then I added a variation of colors to emphasize the character.
This is actually the first time I’ve tackled pixel art. I just grabbed one of my characters that I’ve drawn on the side and went on with what I normally know, but translate it to pixel art. Always wanted to do it, but never had the time. Now, for my first try I forgot to resize the image. It looks tiny as hell, and I was too lazy to redraw the entire thing at a bigger size. For my first time? Not bad, definitely gonna practice this again soon.
