Getting Started

Follow these steps to get started in our course.

Visit Brightspace

This site has information about the media we will be learning, software we’re using and things like that. It’s kind of like your textbook for the class.

Brightspace is where we will have class-specific information like the syllabus, grades, office hours, and things like that which are specific to your section.

Come to Class

This is an in-person class and coming to class is a bit part of being successful in the class.

Get Access

You will need to remember three logins for this class. Two of them you already have and one you will need to create.

  1. CUNYFirst: the same login you use to get on CUNYfirst. This login will be used for:
    • Brightspace
    • Adobe Software
    • Dropbox or OneDrive
  2. BMCC Email: the login you use to access your BMCC email address. This login will be used for:
    • Logging in to the computers in the classroom or computer labs at BMCC
    • Accessing the BMCC OpenLab
    • LinkedIn Learning: this is a site that has some tutorials you can use for extra help.
  3. GitHub: this is the login that you will need to create. See below for more information.
  4. Quizlet: we will use this to help study for quizzes. You can use an existing Google or Facebook account to sign up.

Brightspace

You should have access to this through your CUNYfirst Login. If you can’t log in to Brightspace, contact the BMCC Service Desk.

OpenLab

While you can view this class site on the OpenLab without being a member, you won’t be able to add make posts (required), add content or see info in our profile page . To become a member of the site:

  • Sign up for the OpenLab (instructions)
  • Go to our Class Profile Page
  • Click Request Membership (you have to be a logged in member of the OpenLab to see this)
  • After I approve the request, you will be a member.

GitHub

We will use GitHub for our web and programming parts of the class. The GitHub login will also give you access to some other web sites that can support your learning.

  • Sign up for GitHub
    • Your username is PUBLIC. Choose a username you are OK with people knowing. Whether you use your name or something anonymous is up to you.
  • (optional) sign up for the Student Developer Pack

Quizlet

We will use Quizlet to help you study for the three quizzes in this class. You can use an existing Google or Facebook account to log in (which I recommend if you have trouble remembering logins).

Quizlet Account click on the Sign up for free button.

I will post in Brightspace an invite link to our class on Quizlet. You will do that after you create an account.

Get Your Computer Set Up

You need access to a computer to do the homework for this class. You will also need software. In addition to our classroom, there are computer labs where you can do your work.

If you have your own computer at home, get these on your computer:

  • Audacity (free)
  • Adobe Creative Cloud. download the Creative Cloud app, then you can sign in (with your CUNYfirst username/password and download software from the Creative Cloud app.

Get a Loaner

If you don’t have a computer that can do Zoom and do Audacity, or Photoshop or the other programs we will use, you can get one from the Library at BMCC on the 4th floor of 199 Chambers.

Locate a Computer Lab

If you don’t have a computer at home, or if it’s not a laptop, then you should know where the labs are at BMCC. visit the Tools help page for more info.
