This information is for Video Arts and Technology (VAT) majors for Fall 2021.
Registration Availability
All VAT and MES classes are open for registration! Now is a great time to register as you have the most flexibility in building your schedule.
Most courses will be online either synchronous or asynchronous. There will be a limited number of face-to-face sections, mostly introductory classes. See Face-to-face classes for Fall 2021 below for more info
Summer 2021 Tuition Waivers
With the summer waiver, the school pays for the tuition and you pay the fees. Register for an eligible summer course by May 1 (summer 1) or June 15 (summer 2) for priority selection for a waiver. If you have questions email Academic Advisement & Transfer Center at aatc@bmcc.cuny.edu.
There are two types of waivers
- Petrie Completion Waiver
- To be eligible you can only have three (3) or fewer courses left to complete your degree.
- If you’re eligible then any course that counts for your degree can have the tuition waiver (up to one course in summer 1 and one course in summer 2.
- STEM Waiver
- This applies only to STEM courses. It must be one of the listed courses below and count for your major.
The following MEA courses are eligible for STEM Tuition waivers in Summer and count for your major:
- Your Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning course
- Your Life and Physical Science courseMEA 201 (Professional Development and Career Planning in Media Arts and Technology)
- MEA 201 (Professional Development and Career Planning in Media Arts and Technology)
- MEA 371 (Media Arts and Technology Internship)
- MMP 100 (Introduction to Multimedia)
- These classes may count as an Advised Elective
- MMA 100 (Foundations of Digital Graphic Design)
- ANI 260 (Introduction to 2D Animation)
- ANI 401 (Introduction to 3D Animations)
- ANI 402 (3D Animation Projects)

Face-to-face (in-person) classes for Fall 2021
While most classes will be online in Fall 2021, we are working on the logistics to offer a limited number of in-person classes. some will be fully in-person and some hybrid of in-person and online. The possible courses are: VAT 100, MMP 100, MMP 250 and ANI 260.

Study Labs Fall 2021
We do plan on opening computer labs for you to use to do homework in Fall 2021. The number of labs and the process for using them will be posted closer to the start of the Fall semester.
Internships
If you want to take the internship class, MEA 371 Media Arts and Technology Internship, then you will need to register on Career Express and attend an Internship Information Session. The Office of Internships and Experiential Learning registers you. You can’t register yourself on CUNYfirst.

New Courses
Flyers attached for ANI 360 and MMP 270. The MEA courses count differently for each major.
- ANI 360 2D Animation Projects: you will use industry standard 2D animation software to make original animations in traditional hand-drawn animation as well as cutout and stop-motion animation.

- MMP 270 Introduction to Video Game Design: Topics include Principles of Game Design, basic programming, graphics and animation, sound design, publishing and distribution.

- MEA 300 Special Topics Courses: each section is different. All MEA 300 courses require Department Permission for registration. Use https://bit.ly/mea-request to ask for permission.
- MEA 300 1000, Topic: Documentary Production

TV Studio Courses
As is the case in Spring 2021 we will not be offering the TV Studio classes: VAT 161 and VAT 261. There are a number of alternatives:
- Take other VAT Production courses: VAT 171, VAT 271, VAT 165, VAT 265
- Take MEA 300. We will sub the following sections of MEA 300 this semester for a VAT Production course. Please contact our department with that request.
- MEA 300 1000, Topic: Documentary Production
- We will also consider other media production courses as substitutes on a case-by-case basis. If you are interested, please contact us.
