Accessing the Makerspace Laptops:

The Makerspace laptops have all the software already installed. While you are encouraged to bring your own laptop, you may choose to use one in the Makerspace.

The Makerspace laptops do not leave the room and will only be available during class hours or Open Lab hours. The Learning Resource Center is available for lab work and tutoring, and Room S-510C, Room S-510F, Room S-510G, and Room S-510H May be open for use of their machines outside of class.

Makerspace Laptop Rules:

  • Do not eat/drink while using the Makerspace laptops. If you are, please put them aside on the workbench away from you while eating.
  • The Makerspace Laptops are shared with other students, so please remember to log out of everything before you leave. We are not responsible for any compromised accounts.
  • The Makerspace is not responsible for any missing or lost files, you are responsible for saving/storing projects. Make sure to bring a storage device or have a cloud storage service.
  • Please do not install anything unless I instruct you to.

Setting up Using BMCC/CUNYfirst Accounts:

Please read this carefully as it will get confusing. You will need access to both your BMCC email (@stu.bmcc.cuny.edu) and your CUNYfirst email (@login.cuny.edu).

Example of BMCC email: leia.organa77@stu.bmcc.cuny.edu
Example of CUNYfirst email: leia.organa77@login.cuny.edu

If you are having issues with either email, reach out to the Service Desk:

If you do not have access, I will be collecting names and student IDs in class.

However should you miss the first class or need to do it on your own, email John Marshall (jmarshall@bmcc.cuny.edu) and CC myself (krosen@bmcc.cuny.edu) AND Professor Stein (cstein@bmcc.cuny.edu). Make sure to put your name and Student ID number.

Creating Your OpenLab Portfolio:

Online Guide Via Early Childhood Education Openlab

  1. Navigate to My Profile.
  2. On your My Profile page, click on + Create Portfolio
  3. Name your portfolio however you wish, and create a URL for it, and add a description. You may want to come back and add an avatar later.
  4. Choose your privacy settings. It is recommended that you keep it public as BMCC will allow you to use this to host your portfolio post-graduation to use for hiring purposes. If you choose to make it Private, I MUST be given a link and or invited access in order to access and grade your work.
  5. You do not need an Academic Unit, skip that.
  6.  Click Create and Continue.
  7. ECE has a set template, you can skip that.
  8. Scroll down to Associated Privacy Settings, and choose your Privacy setting again.
  9. Click Next Step
  10.  Make sure that the top option is set to SUBSCRIBER. This means anyone following your portfolio can only see the items and cannot edit or change anything.
  11. Select Finish when you are ready to finalize. The link will be on the right side of your portfolio titled My Portfolio.

Note: OpenLab is basically a WordPress site, so if you’re familiar with the platform you might get a hang of it pretty easily. You can choose to customize your site however you wish if you’d like, or even move MEA 211 into its own section. I recommend booking time with me either through office hours or Open Makerspace hours if you want a brief walkthrough on this.
