Dear Students,

Welcome to Course Quantitative Reasoning Mat 160!

This is where I will post time-sensitive information critical to the course success. You might also see due dates for assignments and projects; changes to your syllabus, or corrections and clarifications of materials.

Tip: Remember to log in often and not wait until the last minute to complete your assignments!

Course Description: This course aims to teach students how to think competently about quantitative information. Students learn how to take real-world problems, translate them into mathematics, and solve them. Topics include thinking critically, numbers in the real world, financial management, statistical reasoning, probability, and mathematical modeling.

(You will find the syllabus and more information in this course site).

A positive learning environment relies upon creating an atmosphere where diverse perspectives can be expressed, especially in a course that focuses on pressing and controversial social and political issues. Each student is encouraged to take an active part in class discussions and activities. Honest and respectful dialogue is expected. Disagreement and challenging of ideas in a supportive and sensitive manner is encouraged. Hostility and disrespectful behavior are not acceptable. Just as we expect others to listen attentively to our own views, we must reciprocate and listen to others when they speak, especially when we disagree with them. However, in this class, our emphasis will be on engaging in the mutual exploration of issues as presented in the course readings as scholars rather than in defending points of view we have formed outside the classroom.

This is a 15-week semester course. It starts on August 26, 2020, and ends on December 20, 2020. You are responsible for all of the readings, videos, and assignments that are due at the end of each week. You must also have purchased the [platform or book name here] license when the course starts. Most of the assignments will require access to [platform].

Each week you will log into Blackboard, watch the intro video, and go over the assignments due. You will then go to the assignment for the module to complete various assignments on that platform. You will also complete one term group-research project, share it on the blackboard and present it to the class. This project consists of analyzing mathematics quantitative reasoning, connections to real-life applications, and answering questions about it. Once you complete the assignments, you will come back to Blackboard and participate in a weekly discussion, where you will watch a video and post answers to questions about the video. Once you post your answers, you are required to respond to one or more of your colleagues’ posts.

To recap:

  • Complete weekly assignments stated in the module.
  • Participate in a weekly Discussion on Blackboard.

Word of advice: don’t wait until the last minute to complete your assignments. I don’t accept late assignments and if you have any technical difficulties, you will need time to solve them in order to submit your assignments on time.

Best of luck and see you online!
