There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today, and each is unique in a number of ways. Communication is a core component of any society, and language is an important aspect of that.

  11. Language serves as the primary medium in which humans communicate and express themselves to one another. Language involves a complex system of sound, symbols, and order that allow individuals to express ideas and convey meaning. Beyond utility, language is an important component of human cognitive development (Linguistic research such as Victor of Aveyron or Genie the Wild Child have served as proof of this). How we perceive and interact with the world is influenced by language; As soon as we are born we begin to learn language, familiarizing ourselves with the sounds and grammatical rules we find around us.
As it relates to culture, language is a constantly evolving vault of collective knowledge within a community. Within any given language you can find encoded the history, traditions, and social norms of its speakers. In other words, language influences us and we influence language. 1. It really isn’t writing…at least not from the traditional linguistic perspective (we generally only look at spoken language).
