  7. Hello all,

My name is Hannah, I’m 27 years old and originally from Wisconsin. I moved to New York about 2 years ago from North Carolina where I had lived for about 7 years. I attended a community college in North Carolina and transferred to BMCC in January. I currently work as a bartender and am working towards my associates degree in Liberal Arts. After I get this degree, I plan to transfer to a 4-year university to obtain a bachelors degree.

I am hoping to graduate from BMCC in December of this year, and in order to do that I need to fulfill my intensive writing credit. I am interested in language and am looking forward to this course. I am not bilingual, and am taking this course in conjunction with an Intro to Spanish course. Looking forward to a great mini-master with you all!

As a result, this has sometimes caused mis communication between people in conversations.

In hopes of taking this class, I am hoping to learn more about language, dialects and cultures and how it impacts who we are and how we show up in the world. I believe it is important to know about the different ways you can communicate and how communication impact culture whenever it’s about food, traditions or holidays.

  10. Hello all! My name is Marquise Sutton and honestly I’m here at BMCC to simply test all the various educational waters. Last semester I took an introduction to Linguistics course and fell in love with the world of language. I was left constantly surprised by the intricacies of how we use language and how much of our understanding of language is developed organically without inspection. I also took a Language, Race, and Ethnicity in the US course over the summer that gave me a glimpse into language’s intertwined relationship with culture.
Getting an education in linguistics and how we utilize language has helped me in all facets of life. For example, a brief learning in articulation and tongue positions has helped me in becoming a better singer now that I am consciously aware of how I can use phonetics to my advantage. All in all, most subjects bore me but the world of linguistics has kept me hooked.

  11. Hi there,I’m Ishtiyak Ahamed, and I’m majoring in Political Science. My main goal is to contribute to my community while gaining hands-on experience.

  12. Hello everyone, my name is Ahmed-Tijani Madaha and I am a transfer student here at BMCC.I am pursuing a degree in Computer Information System and this is my second semester here at this school. Being my parents only child growing up in the city, it’s always been a burden on my back to make sure that I am extra aware of my decisions that could affect my livelihood. Going to school and acquiring knowledge is one way of increasing your chances at a good pay in life and I believe my passion in computers will help me be successful soon.

I enrolled in this class because of two reasons, the first being the pool of classes offered for the 8 week session. I was limited to which classes I could choose and when I seen this class, I immediately thought why not. Computer science has it’s own language to it so why not understand the history of language itself.

I currently work for American Airlines and I love it. I wanted to take this course because this course encompasses everything that I love.
The study of languages and culture is so intriguing to me. Even though it is very hard for me to learn a new language I love to know different dialcets in speech and how languages fuse together in some instances and then make up a whole new language like the French Creole language in Lousiana for example. I cant wait to dive deeper in this course and learn more things than before
