Assignment: Your second reading response assignment for LIN 150 will be over the K Dare Hill article.
For this assignment, you will write a 2-page paper in which you do two things:
A) Write a summary of the chapter in no more than two well-formed paragraphs. Keep in mind a few
things about writing a proper summary:
1) Summaries contain your own words BUT in the order of the author
2) Summaries do NOT include direct quotes
3) Summaries do not include opinions
B) Write a response that provides a general analysis of the chapter and, most importantly, addresses this
question: How does this chapter provide a good explanation of the nature of the relationship being
language and culture and what does that have to do with race? This part of the paper should be around
5-6 well-formed paragraphs in length. Be sure to make specific references to the piece.
PARAMETERS:
1) Paper should be at least two pages in length. I do not mind if students write more, but I will
definitely deduct points for not writing enough.
2) Please use a normal font and a normal font size (12).
3) Please use APA format in you citations and BE SURE TO CITE! 4) AS ALWAYS IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS!
FINAL!
- What is a topic that you have found particularly interesting in this course? Why do you find it interesting?
- What aspect of this topic are you interested in exploring more?
- What question would you like to ask about this topic?
Assignment: FINAL Research Proposal
Scope: 4-5 page paper in which you:
- Identify a research question or problem related to the content of this class.
- Show through scholarly literature (approx. 3 articles) why this is a question worth asking or a problem worth solving.
- Describe clearly how you intend to go about researching this problem by describing the SPECIFIC methods (usually 3 methods) you would follow to conduct research in this area.
FORMAT: typed, double-spaced using an appropriate font and font size. You must use in-text citations in APA and include a works cited page (also in APA). Works cited page DOES NOT count towards assignment length. DUE as a word or PDF attachment no latter than Dec. 14th 3PM.
Essay Test!
In a well-formed, multi-paragraph essay, please answer the following question:
What makes a language/dialect endangered? Are languages/dialects of people of color endangered? What is your evidence for your position? Who is responsible for preserving endangered languages/dialects? Is the preservation of endangered languages/dialects solely the responsibility of members of the affected speech community or should society at large share the responsibility? Why?
BE SURE to include citations to academic sources that SUPPORT your argument. All citations should be in APA format.
Please send the essay to me via email (tvoorhees@bmcc.cuny.edu). Send the assignment as EITHER a word document or a pdf. Please submit by November 9th at 10:00PM
