HED 110 Comprehensive Health Education

Course Description: This course in health educations offers a comprehensive approach that provides students with the knowledge, skills, and behavioral models to enhance their physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual health as well as facilitate their health decision-making ability. Areas of specialization include: alcohol, tobacco and abused substances, mental and emotional health, human sexuality and family living, nutrition, cardiovascular health, environmental health and health care delivery.

Extended Course Description: This course is an introduction to health education with a personal health focus – this makes it relevant to all people who are concerned about their health. The course will allow you to make informed decisions about your own health and teach you ways to find information beyond what is covered in the class. We will get an introduction to public health and describe how social, economic, and environmental conditions impact your ability to have good health. This course is required for all of the Health Education Department major programs.

Ungrading and evaluation of students

Let’s ask ourselves a question – why are you here? Are you in college to get good grades or to learn something? And what motivates you to learn? Research has long showed that grades do not lead to better learning (https://www.alfiekohn.org/article/case-grades/), so this semester we will try something new to help you get the most out of the class. I will not be assigning letter grades for any of your assignments. Instead, I will give you points for effort in each assignment. You can choose whether you want to complete all or most of the assignments, or just some of them. As long as you follow the guidelines for each assignment, you will receive the point. If something is missing, I will provide you with feedback and ask you to resubmit.

Since BMCC does require me to assign you a grade at the end of the semester, the level of effort you put into the course will correspond to the grade you receive. We will still abide by due dates so that I can give you thoughtful feedback and allow time for revision and/or continuation of a project.

Note: I will allow you to resubmit assignments that aren’t completed satisfactorily. That means you can always make your final grade higher just by following my feedback on your assignment.
