Discussion 13
This week, rather than writing a long prompt, I would like you to share some art and a few sentences about why you chose it. You can either make the piece of art or find it and share it. It could be an image, a video, a piece of writing, etc. Please
- Share it in a post
- Be sure to tell us who made the art
- Tell us why you chose it and how it is activist to you (there are no wrong answers)
- Please feel free to talk about the readings in your reading reflection.

Discussion 11 | Topic & Instructions
This week, your responses can be shorter. We have several weeks where we can explore “topics” in gender and women’s studies. This can be very broad and so I am asking that you include in your post this week, some areas you would like the class to explore. So this week, please respond to the following:
- How do this week’s readings by Garza and Williams (and Anzaldua if you did the optional reading) expand your understanding of identity politics?
- What topics would you like to explore as a class in the remaining weeks of the semester? Optional: Why these topics?

Discussion 10 | Topic & Instructions
- What is meant by the following quote?: “We might use our position at the bottom to make a clear leap into revolutionary action. If black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.”
- What does the Combahee River collective mean by “identity politics”? How do you see this operating in Paris is Burning?
- What do race and gender have to do with capitalism?

Discussion 9 | Topic & Instructions
This week you read two pieces that were written in 1970. In “The Politics of Housework” Pat Mainardi makes a distinction between the Liberated Woman and Women’s Liberation. In “The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm” Anne Koedt calls for a reexamination of women’s sexual pleasure. (Note: these pieces were written in 1970, and “women” means “cisgender heterosexual women” in this context.)
- What do you understand the liberated woman to be?
- How might the liberated woman be important for women’s liberation?
- How do these pieces show that “the personal is political”?

Please, however, make sure you address the reading/video in your reading reflection. Also, please hit the “Global Feminism” link and look around–see what interests you and let me know. Thank you.

Discussion 6
Many feminists claim that capitalism is directly opposed to the goals of feminism which include equality for all and the erasure of all forms of oppressions. The article refers to “gender mainstreaming” which is a policy mostly instituted in other countries:
“Gender mainstreaming means integrating a gender equality perspective at all stages and levels of policies, programmes and projects. Women and men have different needs and living conditions and circumstances, including unequal access to and control over power, resources, human rights and institutions, including the justice system. The situations of women and men also differ according to country, region, age, ethnic or social origin, or other factors. The aim of gender mainstreaming is to take into account these differences when designing, implementing and evaluating policies, programmes and projects, so that they benefit both women and men and do not increase inequality but enhance gender equality. Gender mainstreaming aims to solve –sometimes hidden- gender inequalities. It is therefore a tool for achieving gender equality.” (https://www.coe.int/en/web/genderequality/what-is-gender-mainstreaming)
Think about your own relationship to capitalism in the United States.
Have you been successful in the market place? Why or why not?
What are your goals for your career? Are you confident you will reach those goals?
Finally, what would a feminist economy look like so that nobody is exploited?
