Madeline RosarioParticipantSociety is a group of people living together that interact with each other, share a common culture and share social territory. Sociologists study group interactions, from small and personal individuals to very large groups. It is important for a sociologist to understand and look into all aspects and different levels of society. To have a better view of what is going on in a society, you should study patterns of social relationships that may have changed over time and everyday cultures. Another way to look into a society perspective is by investigating and developing critical analysis about change in a community, acceptance and social orders. Living in a society can be both good or bad depending on what you may be influenced by. For example there are people that are raised in a neighborhood where people are always getting killed, there are higher crime rates, they are used to hearing curses growing up without anyone correcting them, etc. This can be the norm for them because they are used to it and everyone living in that particular area is used to it as well because they are using those manners as well. Therefore, it can influence them to follow up with the same bad habits as everyone else in the society. On the other hand for example, living in a society where you would not hear curses so much and there was barely any crimes influenced the rest of the society to follow up as well and it seems normal to them as well. Both influences are what makes it the norm. I believe that when you are stuck in a society you are mostly influenced by what you are surrounded by. It does not necessarily mean that you are put to grow up in a bad or good shape, but you have to be able to understand how things outside of your society works, which can either influence you to continue what you are exposed to, or learn from them. Where I grew up there were mostly hispanics in my neighborhood and in school, I was used to speaking both languages spanish and english and I was used to speaking spanglish to everyone in my town and everyone in my society were used to that type of language as well. But I noticed after high school where I left my town for school, it made it harder for me to stick to speaking english only because I had way more diversity at school and not everyone spoke spanish. I realized how I needed to improve on my english skills as it was also my second language. Also where I grew up in the hispanic community our religion/ the food we ate were all similar and that was something I was used to and did not expect so much diversity outside. I was able to view things from another perspective when I moved out of my town. I met new friends with different backgrounds, religious beliefs, culture, food etc.
In this society I am a hispanic, working hard girl who needs to go to school and be successful for our families. I believe I am going to school to make my family proud but also for myself and my success because I know how important it is for me. I am the second generation immigrant in my family that is going to college and I want to influence my younger siblings and other people how important it is to go to school. I do not believe that going to school is the only way to succeed. I believe that there are other opportunities out there for success but education is very important. As a hispanic in this society, we all know how many of our family members are depending on the government and those funds are not enough to sustain ourselves so it is best not to continue that pattern on but to end it and do something better because that is why we are in this country in the first place. I think others may see me as an independent girl because I am not living with my parents anymore as a 22 year old anymore. Others view me as not taking life seriously or irresponsible women, just because of what they see on social media once in a while which happens to be me partying. No matter how others view me, it would not affect me because they do not know what other things I actually do in life. Some people think I just party and joke around based on what they see me post online, while others that know me outside from that, know who and what type of person I really am. You should never judge anyone based on what you see without getting to know them first. There have been many cases where you may not like a person based on their looks, sexuality, religion etc. but it is good to understand what made them become the way they are. Society benefits because people with sociological training are better prepared to make informed decisions about social issues and take effective action to deal with them.
