julio lazaroParticipant<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Who am I in this society ? I am a hispanic male who in this society people don’t really expect much from. The expectation is eventually I’ll get caught up with drugs or the wrong crowd but in reality that’s not the truth. Being uncle gives me a role to play in this society. A role model for 3 Nieces and two nephews, it’s not easy being a full time student and working full time but that doesn’t stop me from doing it. It’ll be easy to give into the expectations of society but I know that’s not what I want and it’s also not the image i want to show as i have my nephews who love being around me. We live in a society where people make assumptions based on the color of our skin as from first hand experience you have random people come up to you asking “ do you speak english?” before they decide to ask for your help because they need directions. It’s become a norm to offend someone before asking for their help. In this society the males in my family failed to finish school and still went on to be successful so even if society as a whole believes certain people won’t make anything of themselves without a college degree it’s simply not true. In this society I am a hispanic male but from what I’ve seen with my own eyes and people I’ve got to know there’s many variants of what that means from successful business owner with no college degree to Lawyer. </span>
<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>People may see me as someone setting their expectations too high but I’ve always thought about it as if i set a high expectation and i fall just short of it then you’re still in a better position then someone setting low expectations and hitting those. People may see hispanics as low class and minorities but never want acknowledge the courage it takes to leave your home country for another country where you know no one to help provide a better future for your family. Many of us owe a great deal of thanks to our parents for being able to have the courage to do so. So even if society wants to see us in a certain light hispanics know the whole picture and what it means. My role is to get my degree not because I have to and it’s my only means of success but because It’s the opportunity my parents came here for and it’s something i feel like that’s owed to them. </span>
