Portia AndersonParticipantWhat are your thoughts on plagiarism in today’s world?
I think plagiarism is as old as humans have been alive. It probably happens a lot more than we think and its very unfortunate. Reading this it was very disheartening being an artist myself in the art and animation field which is already very segregated and not accessible to everyone. Cheap labor abroad and wealth creates a gap for independent artists like myself trying to make it so it upsets me that these “content” creators could not have any empathy for issues such as these. At first it probably was innocent. A lot of us repost things all the time on social media not thinking there is any value to what we post and we don’t repost to be malicious. However it is one thing to be unaware of the harm but another to go out of your way to block creators that tell you you’ve stolen their work and harass them for speaking out.
I was surprised to know that Netflix, Oprah and Comedy Central would dismiss the integrity of their brands and the creators they negatively affect to use Jerry Media for marketing purposes. I also had no idea that Netflix would even give Jerry Media the platform to further steal content from smaller accounts. Its disgusting that Netflix of all platforms would allow Jerry Media to spin such a bias story and let one guy take all the blame for the disaster of the Fyre Festival. Furthermore why isn’t the Creative Artists Agency doing background checks on who joins? Aren’t they for the artists? Where they not aware of these accounts controversies?
I’m really happy to see Comedy Central and Bumble severing ties with Jerry Media but also extremely disappointed with Instagram. To set rules for everyone to follow but allow bigger accounts to break the same rules is mind blowing to me. Its an unfortunate epidemic that is also happening with YouTube. It just shows that sponsorships and ad deals mean more to these cooperation’s than the art and content they allow on their platforms. Clearly these accounts and Instagram forget what it means to be apart of “social” media. To be social is to be civil and there is nothing civil with stealing. Artists join these media accounts to promote their brands and work in a safe space. If Instagram is going to feed our content to the highest bidders and not give any of us credit then the #fuckfuckjerry movement is necessary.

Portia AndersonParticipantI dug deeper into the FuckJerry situation trough a few YouTube videos and articles and I can’t believe Vice was apart of the bias Fyer Festival Documentary on Netflix! Twitter and YouTube have also not reprimanded FuckJerry for their stolen content or the fact that some of their posts do not disclose that they are ads! Extremely sad but I’m proud that their actually losing followers since the fuckfuckjerry movement. They went from starting at 14.3 million (I think) to just 14 million!
