Project: American women in Europe during the long WWII

- OpenOpen
This is a book in progress which explores American women — largely the active anti-fascist ones– who lived and worked in Europe during the long WWII, roughly 1937-1947. I begin with American nurses in Spain, working with the American Medical Brigade to support the Spanish Republic. Then I shift to France, where I explore American women who worked in the resistance, some of whom the Germans imprisoned in France and in Ravensbruck. I close with a chapter on occupied Germany — exploring gender and citizenship in the light of the increased power of a victorious America.
