Artist Statement

In order to practice social and physical distancing during the Covid-19 Pandemic, the “Six Feet of Separation” guideline was created and followed by people all over the world to reduce the risk of spread and infection. It was a separation for safety. However, the social, political, and economic environment of the United States through this time proved to unveil a larger set of separations and divisions amongst the American people. Some felt closer protesting racial injustice that divided the United States while others disobeyed the social distancing guidelines to host large personal gatherings of their own. The “Six Feet of Separation” monument is dedicated to those affected by the pandemic and the separations it created. Their perseverance through one of the most traumatic events of this century is honored on each individual plaque. As the visitor of this monument steps into the central ring, a six foot ripple effect is created to grant them a panoramic view of the lives affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic. Through the oral histories of those witnesses to this pandemic era, we hope to listen, learn, and diminish the space between us.
