Artist Statement
The Covid-19 pandemic brought many challenges to communities around the country, and the Rutgers-New Brunswick community was no exception. As one of the earliest states to be impacted by the pandemic, the damage inflicted on everyday life here was more expansive and detrimental than in later impacted states. The sudden cessation of in-person attendance for Rutgers students was dramatic, and its impact will reverberate beyond the current moment. The students of the Rutgers New Brunswick community have been affected in many ways: the pandemic has continued to take its toll on their mental health, financial security, academic performance, and physical health. Despite this, everyday life has continued to have to go on, even as many students have put their lives at risk while continuing to work essential jobs, while also having to balance the expectations of online classes. This monument is dedicated to the Rutgers New Brunswick classes of 2020-2024, who persevered during these difficult times and made the Rutgers community strong.
