Artist Statement
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought disaster to all. Corona, Queens was an early epicenter of the pandemic with racial minorities and the economically disadvantaged suffering devastating losses when forced to expose themselves working at jobs that could not be done at home. If not facing eviction or at high risk due to chronic illness, many also could not afford the medical care they needed even when working on the frontlines. This monument stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of essential workers who put their lives on the line to treat the sick, educate the masses and do the best they could to make times feel normal during such uncertainty. We still have a long way to go before treatment becomes accessible to all regardless of race or class but take a second now to thank those around you and to catch your breath.
