Artist Statement
On March 21, 2020, New Jersey issued a statewide order to stay at home in the midst of the 2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic. But for houseless communities across the state, cramped shelters were too dangerous to reside in. Those without houses remain some of the most invisible victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. This monument is dedicated to those houseless victims of the pandemic who suffered more than any human being should have to. The number of COVID-19 related deaths in the houseless community is still unknown. The purpose of this structure is to provide the houseless community of New Brunswick with a space to stay when the shelters are not safe while simultaneously promoting community involvement and engagement.
