Response 2

Looking at the first of Maram’s images from her snapshot post got me remembering when I was in school and the bathroom debate had just really started picking up. Parents were saying that they were afraid for their daughters that boys could just say they feel like females and walk into their bathrooms leading to disaster. Parents were arguing that biological girls should be using the girls restrooms and biological boys should be using the boys restrooms. Turning to the text they really did say it in the best way “the word biological actually has nothing to do with gender or even an original state of being. It Just means pertaining to living matter” (Alok 47). These parents were determined to only see the worst case scenario side of the situation. They chose rather to not believe that a child has the ability to determine their own identity and make their own decision on gender. Like many parents this is not uncommon, but more parents should be supportive of their children if they do decide from a young age, and are accepting of the fact that they feel a different way than perhaps the rest of their peers. The parents in the schools should also be thinking of how this could make a difference in a Childs developing mental health. For example say the child was biologically born male but tells their parents they are identifying as female.  Now the parents support their decision and allow them to dress how they like, play with whatever they choose, etc. but at school they are being told that because of their biology they need to use the boys bathroom despite the fact that they identify as female. Imagine being a biologically female and identifying as female and someone in school telling you that you have to use the boys bathroom. You would most likely be feeling embarrassment, and be uncomfortable because you do not identify as male and do not see why that is the restroom you need to use. As the text discussed to be under the belief that the category of sex is solely fixed on biology is a reflection of how not only science but our society has oversimplified a much more complex topic and discussion. As referenced in the text sex is not only biological, but it is also something that is cultural. Sex is something that is constantly ever evolving and shifting over time. Furthermore going back to the topic of the restrooms in the text as of 2016 there were 1.4 million openly transgender people in the U.S. As the texts supports this is just the open number, but there are so many others who fact the fear of losing their home, jobs, and facing significant violence. It is because of this that I believe more and more should feel supported especially from a young age. More and more gender neutral bathrooms should be coming up. It is a small difference that could greatly impact a child as they are finding their identity. I heard someone recently say that children are simply tiny humans which is true they are just tiny humans meaning they can discover and explore their identity all we need to give them is endless love and support never making them feel they need to conform or bend a certain way to appease others.

gender binary can be a confusing as it is for me. I have understanding that how someone looks in the outside doesn’t necessarily means that’s how they feel in the inside. Such as a boy can wear dress and nail polish and girl can cut their hair and wear baggy clothes and can chose to be identified anyway they like. But i also understand the problem with bathrooms. A trans person might feel comfortable using the woman’s bathroom than the mans bathroom i can see why some women might still be uncomfortable with that idea. I think it’s all about finding a balance between both.

Gender Binary is when the gender is identified into two; masculine and Feminine. People are in danger because of this, a boy acting “soft” is seen as wrong meanwhile there is nothing wrong with that. Men are human beings to and should be allowed to act the same way.  You can get beat up because you are not walking regular or because you look different. That is why there are many people who do not feel comfortable because the society won’t let them express their selves without it having consequences. I don’t blame people for wanting to stay home and just avoiding problem but again we can’t just sit and do nothing. Being a woman does not mean you can’t be strong or be good at other things men do, it is very downgrading even assuming such. That is why women speak up about this, and others seem like we are just talking. Not everything the society speaks about is the right thing, humans have the right to speak up and change it and let others be comfortable also. Most people that bully you are the ones who are jealous that you are able to express yourself, they wish they could be you at that moment, I have come to learn that.

Trans/Nonbinary

Like Janneriz Lopez, I too did not understand much about nonbinary and trans gendered people, but, after reading the article that elaborated and highlighted some facts about the terms, I have come to realize that there was such a term, and that some people preferred to be recognized as such. What struck me the hardest is that the government supported and did nothing to protect those people. I believe that is wrong to make someone feel less than who they are for how they feel about themselves. Wearing baggy clothes or acting a certain way should not have anything to do with someone’s character. What is even more sad is that people of color are treated even worse than their peers when they publicly identify themselves as nonbinary and trans gendered. Just as everyone else we all need to be treated as human beings and respected for who we are, no matter how you identify and for sexual orientation, color, or race.

In today’s modern world people are becoming more accommodating and accepting of people who are different, for those of us who are parents we just never know when our children would come to us and tell us that they feel different, we don’t have a choice but to be supportive. We now live in a world where the idea that pink is for girls and blue is for boys no longer exist. However, coming from a small Island in the Caribbean and residing in the community where it is predominantly Caribbean descents, I have seen and heard the ignorant behavior and homophobic statements that are made by some within my community. While I do not pass judgement on anyone, I understand that there needs to be education, those people were raised without anyone educating them on people who are different should be treated, although, it should be universal, because I remember as a small child I was thought to be kind to others . Discrimination is wrong at any level.

Hopefully, one day we can all live in a world where everyone is accepted and not looked down upon for who or what they are, and our governments local and national will treat all people equal. Special laws should be enacted to be sure the safety and well-being of all people. Something as simple as going to the bathroom should not result in getting arrested or been assaulted by the police or anyone. It is time to stop, educate, think, and accept that the world we live in today has become the melting pot for all types of different preferences, we just must learn to live as one people in a loving world. To combat the negativity and crimes committed against people who are different there should be laws making it punishable with severe penalties such as prison time with lengthy stays and heavy monetary fines, sending a strong message that such behavior is not acceptable and would not be tolerated can make the difference in good and evil.
