The other day I was having a conversation with a friend about sex and gender specifically with kids. We ended up on the topic after she was telling me how the other day while she was doing her makeup her nephew came over and started playing with her makeup brushes and wanted to play dress up. Hs mother told my friend that she didn’t want him playing with those because they are not for boys. I have worked in retail for three years now and it has always been something related to children. I was telling my friend some of the experiences that I have had over the years with products that are more associated with girls such as sequins, pink, flashy vs with boys it was dinosaurs, camo, blue, and more. I have even heard parents tell their sons in the stores that they could not have the neon orange jacket that they should get the blue one or tell their daughter that the black pants they picked out are not as pretty as the sequin skirt. This is all further in part with the fact that the marketing out there is gendering products. This is instilling the idea into these young and impressionable minds that boys and girls can only look a certain way. This post by the account @feminist on Instagram did a really good job of explaining it further I recommend reading it provides a further insight into the topic https://www.instagram.com/p/CSemogfsAGo/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
