Humans rights are a given but for many it’s not. Some people are not able to live their life freely as they speak out on the wrong doings that’s being done to them. The triangle shirtwaist company factory is one of the most famous incidents in American industry where 146 workers died. Because of an unfair and unsafe work environment. These workers’ human rights were taken from them in many ways. It was a sweatshop filled with young immigrant women who worked 12 hours a day, every day who couldn’t speak English. There were four elevators but only one worked, there were two stairways down the street but one was looked at and only opened from the inside, and the fire escape was so narrow it would have taken hours for all the workers to use it. This incident shouldn’t have happened in the way it did. These women were being used as slaves with no rights. These women had to fight for their lives till the end, some jumped out the eighth floor just for their families to get their bodies. Incidents like this have happened again. Nearly 3 months of 100 years since the triangle shirtwaist company factory incident, the same thing happened in Bangladesh. In the Bangladesh fire garment factory there were about 5,000 workers. The incident was unforgettable. The exit doors were locked and the workers jumped out the top of the building from the 11th floor for their parents to find their bodies. Management of the factory paid the families only 2,080 dollars as if that’s what’s worth a human life. The workers worked 12-14 hours a day making one tenth of what the workers in the triangle were making. The workers were working for companies like Gap. when they would protest for higher wages and work protection they were beaten just because these companies didn’t wanna pay them what they deserve or treat them how they are deserved.

Equal Rights  Amendment Amendment in 1972 was for both men and women had won protections in the workplace, and the  women of the second-wave feminist movement. The amendment  said:  SECTION 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by  the United States or by any State on account of sex. SECTION 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate  legislation, the provisions of this article. SECTION 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of  ratification. But the amendment failed to gain much widespread support in the 1920s partly  because it divided members of the women’s movement along class lines. Working  women at the time were focused on gaining workplace protections for women and  children, and some were concerned that an Equal Rights Amendment would endanger  laws that made factories safer and limited the number of hours women could work.

In conclusion humans should not be treated this way by these big companies. Their lives matter and should be protected for the things they do. This has been a long fight for human labor rights. We as people with voices need to speak out on this and bring awareness for these men, women, and children that are not able to defend themselves. Lastly, caitlyn snapshot really stood out to me. She posted a tiktok which shows how this is still happening in the modern day .

Woman suffrage started in 1848 and ended in 1920 it took decade long to long to end specifically 100 years. So the process was slow. Little things at a time made changes. For example, from “One Hundred Years toward Suffrage: An Overview” shows different impacts during the moment like “1836 Sarah Grimke begins her speaking career as an abolitionist and a women’s rights advocate. She is eventually silenced by male abolitionists who consider her public speaking a liability”, “1848 July 19-20 The first woman’s rights convention in the United States was held in Seneca Falls, New York. The idea for the convention arises spontaneously out of a discussion among Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and three other women over tea. Many participants sign a “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” that outlines the main issues and goals for the emerging women’s movement. Thereafter, women’s rights meetings are held on a regular basis”, and “1917 Women win the vote in New York State. A suffrage petition signed by more than a million women signals the determination of the women of the state (and the suffrage campaign workers who gathered the signatures) to gain the vote. Aiding the suffrage cause is a last-minute decision by Tammany Hall, the powerful Democratic “machine,” not to oppose suffrage, given the danger alienating potential women voters might pose in future elections. The suffrage measure wins by a margin of 100,000 votes in New York City and breaks even in the rest of the state”. These are some impacts that had happened that might have been small at the time but led to great freedom for women. There were many amazing, strong women that contributed to this movement. For example like Ida B Wells who played an amazing role in the movement. Ida was a journalist and an activist. She fought for all women to be able to vote and she even confronted the wiphite woman in the movement who ignored lynching. I look up to women like Ida who stand for the good things but are not afraid to speak up about the things nobody else wants to say or talk about. The woman suffrage movement was for women’s voices to be heard, not to be overlooked, and have their abilities be doubted. But it was a harder time for black women. They had to fight ten times harder to be Heard by white men and women. Black women tended to be excluded from organizations and activities, most white suffragists ignored the contributions of black suffragists. Even after the 19 amendment was passed so women have the right to vote but for most black women had to wait five decades to actually vote themselves. Through the years black women are the most overlooked group in America. As a black woman raised by a black woman, I was taught at a young age that I have to work ten times harder for what I want. It doesn’t matter how good I’m at it compared to my competition. Which can be damaging and discouraging as you get older to go into a harder career because of knowing it’s going to be harder for you no matter what so it makes you wanna do something safe. Even now black women are fighting for their rights and even stigmas that are placed on us. We look strong and can’t be weak. We have to help everyone but when we are fed up and fight back we are looked at as “the angry black women.” Lastly from the snapshot Nicole posted and mostly everyone else were mostly photographers of white women being in the frontlines and fighting which is another example black women not being seen even though they made a huge impact during the women’s suffrage movement.

Activism is a policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change. I think activism is such a strong thing for a person to be. There are many types of activism. But most importantly to me is women’s activism. In 1848 the women’s suffrage movement began which is the start of it all. Women are always overlooked and our abilities are always doubted but we always persevere in every way possible. For example, the film “Girl Connected” shows the limitations that are put on these young colored women which are basically taking their rights and freedom away from them and then using their voice to fight these limitations and stand up for what’s right for them. But as women struggled I feel like that black women have struggled even more.

Black women always fought for equality but we’re overlooked in the women’s movement and civil rights movement. Although black women’s courage, strength, and power were overlooked, they can not be overstated. An article in the New York Times I found interesting called “Black Women Have Consistently Been Trailblazers for Social Change. Why Are They So Often Relegated to the Margins?” Says “In 2014, Black women created #SayHerName to push people to acknowledge that Black men are not the only ones killed by police at a disproportionate rate. While there were massive protests after the killings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Eric Garner, we did not see similar public outrage over Rekia Boyd, Tanisha Anderson or other Black women, girls and femmes who died at the hands of police. “Although Black women are routinely killed, raped and beaten by the police, their experiences are rarely foregrounded in popular understandings of police brutality,” said Kimberlé Crenshaw, who authored and published the #SayHerName reported with Andrea Ritchie, and the African American Policy Forum in 2015. “Yet, inclusion of black women’s experiences in social movements, media narratives, and policy demands around policing and police brutality is critical to effectively combating racialized state violence for black communities and other communities of color.” This part of the article stood out to me because it shows how black women are deeply overlooked even in our own community but we stand fighting for others and our community every time. The second thing that stood out to me is how young people’s voices can make a big impact.

In the article “how to think like an activist” it mentions how when young people speak, the world listens. The article also says “what younger activists might lack in direct experience they make up for with ingenious ways of thinking, working, getting attention and inspiring action”. To me this brings me to think about social media and how young people use social media platforms to make change, bring awareness, and have their voice Hurd. Tick tock has become a huge platform and is used to bring awareness to many things especially around the pandemic while the news was scary and giving out so much information tick tock creators spread those messages in a funny creative way where we all could relate and understand.

Lastly the snapshot by servrine hedouville brings me to my final point. Her snapshot shows a woman of color holding up a sign with the same message as a white woman but the only one that’s getting attention is the white woman. This is very common how people get overlooked and the message being less as important until a non color person speaks about it. This needs to change for all of us to come together and fight as one.

White privilege

White privilege can sometimes be a difficult topic for some. They might think your saying they’re are racist but not necessarily they are many kinds of privilege in the world. Having white privilege doesn’t make you a bad person you can live your day to day life having privilege without noticing it. But you can’t deny that it exists. yamilet snapshot Is a great example of white privilege is be denied or ignored using the famous term “I don’t see race”. Which is definitely not true Mc Inotosh mentions in her article she try’s to detect some of the effects of white privilege in her daily life. Like “ I can if i wish arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time”. Which is a big privilege to have that black people don’t have we tend have to aware of our surroundings most of the time to conform into to what we usually are not. So the people around us don’t think of us as the stigma of how a typical black person acts.

gender binary can be a confusing as it is for me. I have understanding that how someone looks in the outside doesn’t necessarily means that’s how they feel in the inside. Such as a boy can wear dress and nail polish and girl can cut their hair and wear baggy clothes and can chose to be identified anyway they like. But i also understand the problem with bathrooms. A trans person might feel comfortable using the woman’s bathroom than the mans bathroom i can see why some women might still be uncomfortable with that idea. I think it’s all about finding a balance between both.
