Growing up I didn’t like poems and still don’t because of how the wordings on some poems. They get me confused and I just don’t prefer reading like crazy, so that adds to that. But when reading these articles in the week 11 post I seem to have a better understanding and respect the people that write them a little bit more. I liked the poems that had a nice rhythmic to it instead of a broken rhythm where you can’t really understand what’s going on. The week 11 posts showes the different types of poems there are. In the article how to read a poem I found it helpful that it saved the questions you should ask yourself when reading a poem to get a better understanding of it Who is the speaker? What circumstances gave rise to the poem? What situation is presented? Who or what is the audience? What is the tone? What form, if any, does the poem take? Is sound an important, active element of the poem? Does the poem spring from an identifiable historical moment? Does the poem speak from a specific culture? Does the poem use imagery to achieve a particular effect? What kind of figurative language, if any, does the poem use? If the poem is a question, what is the answer? If the poem is an answer, what is the question? What does the title suggest? I find these the most benificial questions that you should ask yourself before or when reading a poem.

My essay will be talking about The most handsome dead man” By “Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I will be focusing on trying to prove more on how the story she made is very imaginative and has lots of magical realism. the reason why I chose this as my thesis and what to talk about was because I like the imagination it put in my mind when the women said he was the size of a sperm whale. this shows that this has an imagination side and a magical realism to it because a man being the size of a sperm whale isn’t normal. I will be using the news paper Beyond magical realism: Teaching Creative Thinking Using Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” as my secondary source due to it being a newspaper. I chose this news paper because it stood out of the crowd and looked like it had good information. Im still looking for a primary source and thinking. In the news article it talked about Marquez used magical realism which falls right under my thesis topic number 2.
The theme of Emily Dicksons poem “The Wife” relates to Mrs. Mallards emotional state in “The Story of An Hour” because in the poem “The Wife” it talks about how a woman that was married had her husband die and it was hard for her and it wasn’t easy but she had to pull her self together and move on and care for herself. In the poem The story of an hour it talks about how Mrs. Millard takes comfort when her husband died and people can see how strong she is for moving on. So as you can see the themes are pretty similar because they both talk about marriage and how to move on and stay strong. they both went along for there own needs and continued work. After Mrs. Millards husband death she was extremely sad but got over it and which it lead her to have more freedom.
In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O Conner the interior of this story is karma in a way because of how the grandmother was selfish and did anything to get what she wanted. When she didn’t get what she wanted she would be difficult to the people around her. She was self centered and didn’t care about anyone else other but her self, She got her karma when her family was killed due to her being difficult . In the end the grandmother saw that being this way and being selfish got her to this point with no one in her family. This led to the point of her and the misfit, where she tries to convince the misfit that he is a good person and should spare her life. This is an example of her manipulation to get her to live more longer. Death is a test of good faith but it seems the grandmother doesn’t have it.
When Aristotle has written that “poetry is a higher form than history.” He qualifies that history is the story of a particular event that happens at a particular time to a particular person or group, while literature is the story of what is universal in the human experience. I agree with this because in poetry the person shows more emotion in ways of rhyme. In the reading of Oedipus the King there were signs of emotions that are still carried out to this day such as revenge and other things that are carried out in our society. In lines 119 ceron says something that relates to the only way to make the empire great is with spilling blood of the people that have done bad to us, meaning revenge. Also oedipus found out that was found to kill his father and marry his mother which that blinded him and made him feel a type of way. this happens in our society where people find crazy news and it changes them.
That is no wonder, master. But I’ll make him remember what he does not know. For I know, that he well knows the country of 1290 Cithaeron, how he with two flocks, I with one kept company for three years—each year half a year—from spring till autumn time and then when winter came I drove my flocks to our fold home again and he to Laius’ steadings. Well—am I right or not in what I said we did? HERDSMAN: You’re right—although it’s a long time ago. MESSENGER: Do you remember giving me a child 1296 to bring up as my foster child? HERDSMAN: What’s this? Why do you ask the question? MESSENGER: Look old man, 1300 here he is—here’s the man who was that child! HERDSMAN: Death take you! Won’t you hold your tongue? OEDIPUS: No, no, do not find fault with him, old man. Your words are more at fault than his. HERDSMAN: O best of masters, 1306 how do I give offense? This part shows that people back then would get killed for talking out of place. I also remember watching a Sparta movie that reminded me about this.
In the story “Araby” by James Joyce some people may think it isn’t a love story but I think it may be one because of how the narrater tries to explain to the reader how the woman in the photo associated with the light is making the boy infatuated with her, He goes on saying that with all his descriptions of her she is edged in almost holy light meaning she looks like an angel. I also noticed that the narrater was asking a lot of questions which makes me think about what type of story this is. Now that I’m thinking about it I think that the narrater is of that old age and now is thinking about life and is now questioning himself. In the beginning he would tell you to keep an eye out for these things like the neighborhood and the house the nameless narrater lives in.
In the article “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, There are two characters that have different personalities and experiences when it comes to the F.O.A store. One character is Mercedes and the other is Sylvia. These two characters have both visited the F.A.O schwarz store and different ideas on how it was. The F.O.A is an expensive store that sell high priced toys. Sylvia was close to the poverty bracket and only one was surprised that there are toys that are this expensive. Sylvia was thinking about the toys and how one toy clown was $35 and she was saying that she can do so much with that for her family like visit her grand daddy Nelson in the country. But with Mercedes she couldn’t wait to get into the store and come back to buy something with her birthday money. These 2 characters have different morals because Sylvia would want to use the money for her family when Mercedes would just want to buy toys. Mercedes was interested and asked the employees of the shop questions about the toys. As you can tell Mercedes has more money than Sylvia or Mercedes is just not responsible with money.
In the story Salvation by Langston Hughes the author was a 12 year old kid going on to 13 who was inspired by the words of his aunt. His aunt was always talking about how Jesus saves everyone and how her words about Jesus were so great. When Langston was hearing these words of greatness, Langston wanted to be saved by Jesus himself. During this time Langston believed in Jesus so much but after a while trying to get Jesus to save him he felt that deep hateness because he was confused on why Jesus didn’t save him but is saving everyone else. Therefore the behavior change in the beginning of the story vs the end of the story was that he was excited to see what Jesus would do and was happy but in the end of the story when he lied to everyone by saying that Jesus saved him but in reality he didn’t get saved, so when he told that lie he become a lier and felt bad about himself deep down. When Langston didn’t get saved by Jesus he questioned his beliefs.
I think the professor assigned the story “The Most Handsomest Dead Man” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez as the first story to show the students that this course will teach a good lesson and a good read at the same time. This may also set the tone for the semester. During the first few paragraphs the story put an image in my mind of a dead guy that arrived on the beach shore with better features than all the men in their village. This story is big on imagination which is what I like. I liked how the story turned out because Esteban was just a good looking dead guy that arrived up on the shore of the beach and inspired the rest of the village to do and be better. When the village saw Esteban and his amazing features it put an idea in the men and women, and they wanted to make him Rest In Peace by changing the village in which they imagined he would like. They decide to create a life for the dead man in return the dead man gives life to the village.
