While going through the readings In week 11 about poetry I believe that my ideas still do remain the same about poetry because to me poetry was always something that was very interesting to read and also write about, I always thought poetry gave me ideas with the type words being used by some poets and also let me be able to expand my vocabulary a little by also using these words along the line. While reading “How To Read A Poem” by Edward Hirsch a few ideas stood out to me and it came in the second paragraph as Edward stated “The goal of careful reading is often to take up a question of meaning, an interpretive question that has more than one answer. ” which I agree with very much because when you read something or such as poetry you are trying to get your answers solved to the questions you may have in the beginning of the reading or poetry and those answers do not come until you keep reading through out the lines.

In my research I will be writing about is Toni Cade Bambara’s “The Lesson”. The reading The Lesson is about how a teacher takes a group of students from Harlem on a school trip to a toy store to try and teach them the worth of money and see how they hold them selves accountable in a store. While looking through the BMCC library I really could not find anything yet to write about but I will continue on doing more research in the library to find something good enough and more understandable and then I will include the sources information in my writing, as their are a lot of stories that can be found to relate to this story I am trying to find one that talks about representation and how the way you represent yourself shows the type of person you are and also gives people a way to judge you.
The theme of the Emily Dickson poem “The Wife” relates to Mrs.Mallards emotional state in “The Story of an Hour” is because the theme I noticed in Emily Dickson’s poem was when I was reading the second group of four lines as she was explaining that if she was to miss anything at all in the new day it would feel that to her as she was not able to accomplish what she had settled for the day because she was a women who enjoyed to do work and missing a day didn’t settle right with her and basically ruined her plans. The way it relates to “The Story of an Hour” to me is because in this story Louise basically was not around the moment her husband died but the people who were are trying to figure ways to tell Louise about her husbands death so that she does not react in a certain way especially since she was not there. The way these two connect are because they both speak about in their own ways how they feel ashamed if they were to miss something big in their lives and in each of them it shows they end up not being in certain places during important times.
In the story “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” by O’Connor I believe that the interior part of the story is about how a grandmother of the family has brought evil upon all of them and tries to convince the family to start heading towards Tennessee for a get away break instead of allowing them to go to Florida and her reason for them not to go to Florida is because their was a article she has read about convicts going to Florida and she does not want her family to get into trouble. While they are on the way to their destination the grandma realizes that they could be heading the wrong way and a few moments after they are ambushed by three men who get out of a car but the Grandma thinks she realizes one of them and that they are trying to go after her whenever they have the chance so to try and stop it they try to disguise the grandma in different suits so that no one realizes her or has any idea.
When Aristotle writes that “poetry is a higher form than history.” to me means that poetry gives you a better understanding of history and explains the experiences that have happened and others have gone through. The timeless human experiences and behaviors that I notice in the reading Oediupus The King is that you notice a lot of different problems going on at once in the reading as it begins with Oedipus killing his own father then end up marrying his own mother who he has no idea is his mother till it later is revealed to him then it continues on to Oedipus accusing Creon for Laius’s death, so all at one you start to notice the amount of situations these characters deal with especially amongst each other when they do not really have true evidence on why some of them have problems with each other, for example Oedipus is just making his own claim that Creon killed Laius but he doesn’t have any true evidence to really support that Creon is the reason to the killing.
“If I am a prophet and wise of heart you shall not fail, Cithaeron, 1245 by the limitless sky, you shall not!— to know at tomorrow’s full moon that Oedipus honors you, as native to him and mother and nurse at once; and that you are honored in dancing by us, as finding But I account myself a child of Fortune, beneficent Fortune, and I shall not be dishonored. She’s the mother from whom I spring; the months, my brothers, marked me, now as small favor in sight of our king. 1250 Apollo, to whom we cry, Find these things pleasing!” While reading this line from the reading I noticed a lot of great language that was being used but the main idea of it all was that Oedipus is being told by the greats that he is very lucky and that if they remain next to his side for a good amount of time their will be no time for him to be a failure and that tomorrows moon will be a honor to him from them to show him the amount of respect they have for him and to express the type of great person he is idolizing himself infront of them to be, Oedipus’s reaction to this is of him being very grateful and respectful as he continues on to say that these actions are not just for him but the people who are around him.
Araby By James Joyce is really about growing up and learning how to love and treat others in the reading it speaks about a child from Ireland who is involve with a girl who lives across the street from him so through out the story he tries to get to know the girl as much as he can and get close to her so he tries to find any way possible to get closer to her. Later on in the story she mentions to him about attending a bazaar so he uses this moment and says to himself that he will attend the bazaar as well but he ends up going by himself and decides to bring her a small gift back to try and win her over. This reading introduces ways of respecting one another and how relationships should really be so that people in relationships do not get into bad encounters.
While reading The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara the two characters I chose to compare their experience by visiting the FAO Schwarz toy store were Sugar and Miss Moore. Sugars experience compared to Miss Moore was very different because once Sugar arrived to the toy store she began to create ideas on how she can be able to steal certain things from the store and get away with it meanwhile Miss Moore is the instructor and she’s trying to keep careful of what they do so that they do not get in trouble. While Sugar was going around the store screaming at the toys she wants very bad Miss Moore caught up to her trying to make sure she was not doing anything she’s not supposed to but Sugar did not want to hear any of It and hoped she would leave her sight already. The comparison I got from the two characters was that Sugar was just trying to cause trouble and Miss Moore was going around trying to stop it from happening.
The way that I see how the narrator has changed from the beginning of the story to the end is on how much more mature he has become. The narrator Langston Hughes starts off in the reading by not caring so much about the people around him and only really caring about himself and making sure what he did was good for him, but through out the reading you start to realize he is understanding more and more that what he is doing and the lies he is saying is not good for him and that it is not going to be good when his family finds out the truth. A quote that really stood out to me from the reading stated that “But I was really crying because I couldn’t bear to tell her that I had lied, that I had deceived everybody in the church, that I hadn’t seen Jesus, and that now I didn’t believe there was a Jesus anymore, since he didn’t come to help me.” this quote to me showed that he was being a little more understanding of what he was doing and that he was slowly ready to own up to what he did and just come out with the truth.
While reading this story I believe that the reason we were assigned to read this is because you want us all to participate and to come together and work as one. This idea came to me because as it states in the second paragraph they say that they found a whale along the sea which came out the water but when they cleaned it a little better it instead was a man who drowned so the first thing they did with his body was take it to someone reliable to find out a little more about it and how it could have ended up on the sand. They then were trying to come to solutions that it could’ve been some one apart of the village so they wanted to go around and make sure it was not. This to me shows that they are working as a team to find out what really happened to the guy and who he really is.
