Growing up poetry was never my thing I sometimes enjoyed some poetry, but I really wasn’t a fan of poetry. After watching the video on poetry and reading activity 2 I still feel the same way about poetry in a way. Although both is explaining how poetry is and what is in poetry it still doesn’t change the way I feel about poetry; however, It can be very interesting the two activity shows how poetry can be done and it gives a better understanding of poetry. Activity 2 actually breaks it down into pieces to make you understand the reading more which is helpful to people like me who really don’t like poetry or understands it. After fully reading activity 2 it made me kind of understand poetry more reading it out loud and asking yourself questions can make you understand the readings a lot.

My research paper would be on the short story “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This story is written by villagers that thought of him as a perfect man he was different from everyone around them, so they thought a change is what they needed because of the handsome man. The article that I would be using as a secondary source is Reading the Meaning of life through symbols: The Handsomest Drowned Man in The World. I was able to find this source through the BMCC library. This article supports my thesis statement because it explains how one person can help another person develop and look thing at things differently in life.
The poem “The Wife” by Emily Dickinson relates to the story “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin because both story I feel like is dealing with freedom and also marriage. In the poem “The Wife” she is stuck between being a free woman and also being a wife as she mentioned in the poem “She rose to his requirement, dropped the playthings of her life” meaning that she is willing to up it and do whatever to become the perfect wife she is supposed to be, and in “The Story of An Hour” shes with her partner that she truly loves but once he passes away she mentions “body and soul free” she felt like a free woman after the death of her husband. Both woman are dealing with marriage form a different point of view one feel like they are required to any and everything for a man at any given moment and one feels happy that her man passed away.
In the essay “A Good Man is Hard To Find” the interior in this story would be selfishness and guilt I believe. In the story, the grandma did not want her and her family to go to Florida for one reason and that was because they were afraid of the misfit. At the being of the story, she said she had a feeling that they were going to get attacked by the misfit, and also she heard that he was going towards Florida and that was also a way of her trying to convince her son to go to Tennessee, They end up getting to an accident which led to her family being in danger three men ran across them which happen to be the misfit man she was trying to stay away from. The misfit believed that he was a good man and the grandmother knew the background and was saying he was also a good man fear never feared the grandma and I thought that was really selfish of her while her whole entire family passed away knowing they were scared the grandma passed away happy.
some timeless human experiences that I have seen the character deal with is death, people dying from left to right it’s like a domino effect. also, him being very stubborn not wanting to take any advice from anyone because he is the leader sometimes you have to put your pride aside and things could eventually work out but being hard-headed and having pride can just cause a negative impact on your life just like how this character is dealing with.
In Oedipus The King lines “245 to me, yes, though he fears himself to take the blame on his own head; for bitter punishment he shall have none, but leave this land unharmed. or if he knows the murderer, another, a foreigner, still let him speak the truth.” The theme of this line would be guilt and shame. The death that happened no one wants to tell the truth about it and wants to keep it all a secret;however, some people arent strong enough to do that so they start to feel guilty, but they still remain quiet. in lines 250-260 I think the theme of that line would be power.
“Araby” is a story about a young boy that is in love with a little girl. Araby tries to show how much he likes this girl by impressing her in many ways. he’s literally obsessed with the girl because he is going out of his way to do things for her. Once he heard that his crush wanted to attend the bazaar, but she couldn’t because she was about to attend school. He also made it his business and tries to bring her a gift from the Dublin bazaar. which is a way of him thinking that would make the girl notice him because he wanted to get her something that she wanted. He was trying so hard to impress the girl and things just didn’t go his way, and he was very disappointed in his uncle due to the fact that he was supposed to come home early and give him some money, which didn’t happen led to the boy into disappointment.
In the article “the lesson” is teaching these kids a lifelong lesson if they want to do better for themselves in the future. Ms.Moore comes into these kids’ lives and tries to show them to make a difference in the future if you want to live a life like this you have to work for it. Sylvia is one of the characters in the story, she feels some type of way when Ms. Moore brings them into the Fao Schwartz store because she feels like it is way out of what they can afford or league as I should say. At the end of the story, Sylvia slowly starts to see why Ms. Moore brought them into the store she realizes that she has a choice the choices were either she can stay be unsatisfied with what ms more did for them or she can do something to make a change in the future so they won’t have to keep living the way they are living. Sugar is another young lady from the story she learns from Ms.Moore right away unlike Sylvia, Sugar basically learned that they can also be successful and experience happiness just like these people in any way.
In the beginning of the story “Salvation” by Langston Hughes. He was a young boy that trusted his aunt’s words she stated that he would be saved by Jesus she was telling him everything that he wanted to hear and he liked the sound of it, so that’s when he started to have faith in Jesus. When he entered the church his mood and also his belief changed as the night went on. He saw that everyone was getting saved besides him and the young boy named Westly. He thought lying about being saved was going to benefit him, but it ended up backfiring him. guilt and fear started to take over him he felt bad about what he did and he was scared to mention what he did because he was going to be viewed as the bad guy in the church so all he can do is cry.
After reading the story “The handsomest Drowned Man in the world.” I noticed that he made a big change for these vilagers after they seen him get washed up to shore. When the people realized what kind of person he was they decided to make a big change for themselves. They noticed that the man was different he had different features from the vilagers they noticed how tall he was they noticed how attractive he was and also his strength. Esteban brung positive energy to the village. I feel like the professor chose this story for the class to read is because one it is a very interesting story, and two I feel like she showing us how having power and being a great person can make a dramatic change in the world. Esteban was on of those people. he was able to make the community change their lives for the better.
