In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O Conner the interior of this story is karma in a way because of how the grandmother was selfish and did anything to get what she wanted. When she didn’t get what she wanted she would be difficult to the people around her. She was self centered and didn’t care about anyone else other but her self, She got her karma when her family was killed due to her being difficult . In the end the grandmother saw that being this way and being selfish got her to this point with no one in her family. This led to the point of her and the misfit, where she tries to convince the misfit that he is a good person and should spare her life. This is an example of her manipulation to get her to live more longer. Death is a test of good faith but it seems the grandmother doesn’t have it.

Hello Justin! I find your take that karma brings misfortune to the family interesting. I don’t know if karma caused tragedy to the family as I checked a map and saw that driving to Florida and driving through Georgia is the same general direction depending on your starting state. The story never mentions the family’s address, so the story might have played out the same even if they headed to Florida. I thought about this a lot, but I guess somewhere during the trip, The Misfit followed the family to the dirt road where they had the accident. It would be odd for The Misfit’s crew just to be waiting along a dirt road for days until someone passed by so that they could ambush them for their clothes and to kill for pleasure. In conclusion, this may be a case of bad luck, even though the story suggests otherwise.
The purpose of the grandmother dressing beautifully addresses her self centeredness. I am impressed by her thinking that if the family has a car accident, someone will recognize her as a lady immediately. At the same time the author sets a foreshadowing as a suspense element that implies the family does encounter an accident. It is also interesting that throughout the story the author doesn’t give the name of the grandmother. I think the author is telling us that the grandmother is “the Misfit” in the family. Most of her unrealistic and hypocritical behaviors don’t let her deserve an identity.
