At the beginning the narrator felt excited to see God and be saved. At the end he got up and lie. The narrator stop to believe in God. The young narrator is different from the way he was at the beginning of the story by first feeling faith and anxious waiting and to see God to be saved but by the end felt disappointing. To the narrator childhood was painful because he was waiting to be saved by God. The narrator has accept the painful about what happened in his childhood because the narrator said that he was saved but not really. Therefore, the narrator had experienced disappointment from his childhood. He come to purpose that he finally came to terms with himself, his uncertainty, and his religion through all the doubt and pain from his childhood. His aunt thinks that Langston was crying because of the Holy Ghost. But Langston is really crying because he had to lied and deceived everyone in the church.

Melissa, thanks for the post. Your description of the narrator at the beginning of the story really captures his emotional state. He is happy and excited and seems to have no doubt about what will happen to him. This is because he is trusting and respectful and believes all that his elders, especially his aunt, have led him to expect. It’s true that at the end of the story, he has become a liar and a faker; however, the large epiphany is that he is no longer that trusting boy who once believed in the power of Jesus to save him.
Hello Melissa, I like your post and also agree with your point of view of his feelings shifting from Langston having faith to having to question his beliefs. The pressure he had to say that he saw the light and was saved was overwhelming for him because at that point he was the only one left from the kids but had to lie because he didn’t want to disappoint his aunt and this lead to the young boy not believing in Jesus and that was the biggest realization that changed him.
Hello Mellisa, we could see the use of irony in Lanston’s actions from beginning to end. In the beginning, he was so excited about church and being saved by Jesus. As everyone in the church sings and prays for their salvation and is saved by Jesus Lanstan feels nothing. In the end, he sins by lying about seeing Jesus and being saved. Had realized that he had not been “saved” by Going to church had the opposite result he expected to be saved but wasn’t and now questions if God is real? Why hadn’t he been saved? His faith has been killed that he no longer believes in Jesus.
