On Plagiarism

I HATE IT. DON’T DO IT.

Ahem. Sometimes students plagiarize by accident, though.

Watch these videos and comment below that you have watched them and understand. Or, if you don’t understand, please post a question! Everyone will benefit.

To show me that you’ve read this whole post, please also suggest a punishment for people who just straight-up copy — that is to say, steal — other people’s writing. Is it too much to hope that we can put good old fashioned stocks out in front of the main building? Kidding, sort of.

  1. I’ve watched both sets of videos on plagiarism and understand both concepts on what it is and how to avoid it. As for a punishment for someone who just copies word for word, they should receive no credit and not have the ability to make up the assignment. Plagiarism won’t get you anywhere in life and the whole point of school is to learn something and apply it to your life.

  2. That era of SNL cracks me up. I watched the videos, and I understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. But what if you’re inspired by someone else’s work? How do you cite something like that? How do you develop your own voice when you’re drawing from other people? As for punishment, I think a failed grade and a discussion on what and why they plagiarized and how they can avoid it in the future. Definitely no make ups, like Ryan said.

  3. I watched the videos, I understand what plagiarism is and how to quote or paraphrase other’s ideas, I believe that a punishment for a plagiarism involves make it again, or fail the assignment if is a serious idea theft.

  4. I understand both videos. As for punishment, I think the person deserves a chance to explain themselves because context is important and so, accordingly, either deduction from grade or a zero for the assignment should be inflicted on them.

  5. After watching both videos, I understand the different types of plagiarism. I think a punishment for plagiarism should be getting a zero on the assignment without getting another chance to turn it in. It is not good to copy other people’s work because we should be doing our own work. We have to be cofident about our work.

  6. I have watched both of the videos and understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. When writing essays or a writing piece, the idea of inspiration from another writer is understandable and can lose track of your mindset, but it is still very important to avoid plagiarizing someone else’s work and how to cite it. And to agree on what everyone else has said also, I think a failed grade for plagiarizing is something that should and is definitely a reasonable punishment for.

  7. I have watched and understand both videos. I think an appropriate punishment for plagiarism is getting the lowest grade on the assignment, or not getting any credit at all.

  8. I have watch both videos and I understand the definition plagiarism and how bad it is and could definitely spoil our reputation so the appropriate punishment would be no credit and ask the student for another opportunity and if the student still plagiarist therefore a zero should be the punishment or report to the CUNY department.

  9. I have watched both videos and I understand the different types of plagiarism. For me I think the punishment should be a zero on the assignment but I always do believe in forgiveness and a second chance so I think there should be a re do paper but with points already taken off.
