It comes into English from Louisiana Creole French. It got there from Spanish Creole, and it got to Spanish from Quechua — I love a well-twisted etymology. (You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagniappe .) So. Give us a little something extra about you. Tell us something I didn’t ask.

You’re from LA and you moved to NY? I plan to move from NY to LA in a couple of years.

Oh wow your majoring nursing thats pretty nice especially going to NYU!
What is your name? What would you like to be called? What pronoun would you like us to use when we refer to you? (For example, common choices include she/her/hers; he/him/his; they/them/theirs.)
My name is Jean Kahler. First name sounds like blue jeans; last name rhymes with sailor. You can call me Jean or Professor Kahler. I use she/her pronouns.
Where are you from? Where do you live now?
I grew up in North Carolina. I’ve lived in Massachusetts and Chicago. Since COVID, I’ve been living with friends in the Catskills Mountains, about 100 miles north of the city. I’m returning to live in my Crown Heights apartment next week.
What are you majoring in OR what academic subject do you like best? What do you like about it?
I majored in theatre and minored in Women’s Studies. I also took classes in a LOT of other departments; I’m an all-purpose nerd. I went to graduate school later (after working in theatre for a while) and studied non-fiction creative writing.
What I loved best about theatre is ensemble collaboration: that’s the part of that education I find myself thinking about the most while teaching. What I loved best about Women’s Studies is looking at the world through a critical lens, asking questions from an outsider perspective. I bring that to our work, too. What I liked best about writing school was learning to look at HOW the writing I like to read works. Which is, of course, the point of a writing class.
What do you like to do outside of schoolwork? What do you like about that?
I like to make small watercolor paintings and ride my bike and swim and lift weights and ski. I really miss singing with my choir.
What do you like about online classes? What do you hate?
I like that all of us being in our imperfect homes lets us see each other as real people. I like that we all get practice writing things in a more casual way than homework assignments. I hate…a lot of other things. It’s exhausting. It’s harder to have lively conversations. I don’t get to sit on the table. (I mean, I guess I can sit on the table. Maybe I should see if that helps.)
What do you like about writing/English classes? What do you hate?
I like that writing is something everyone can work on getting better at, no matter what skills you do or don’t come to the classroom already having developed. I HATE GRADING.
What is your favorite book or the best book you’ve read recently?
Last week I read Julia Alvarez’s “In The Time of The Butterflies.” It blew me away.
What do you like about it?
I like Alvarez’s use of imagery. The writing is beautiful. I like how she turns these heroic figures into real people — and real *women*. I like how they characters’ femininity — all difference from one another — is portrayed as a source or aspect of their strength, not something that is incidental to their activist work.
What are your strengths as a writer? What are your weaknesses?
Boy, can I write a pretty sentence. Boy, am I lazy about putting my ass in the chair long enough to write.
What are you hoping to learn or get better at this semester?
I’m hoping to continue to develop my skills in open pedagogy and trauma-informed pedagogy. I’m also hoping to rediscover some of the sense of play COVID has made hard for me to access.
Lagniappe: This spring, I built a wooden boat. That was FUN.

Hi Professor Kahler,
is nice to meet you, is cool to see all your majors also how you use those to teach, it makes you an original professor.
having online classes has not been easier for me too, I get tired and bored so easily, but be patient and see the good side is the best option for the moment.

What do you like about writing/English classes? What do you hate? – I love to read, but I’m not a strong writer. I think writing about myself is especially intimidating.
What is your favorite book or the best book you’ve read recently? What do you like about it? – I most recently read “Dune” by Frank Herbert. I love science fiction books, and this one was pretty good. I loved the world building and the politics, but I thought the ending was disappointing, and there are several parts I wish he would have fleshed out more.
What are your strengths as a writer? What are your weaknesses? – I think my strength as a writer is that I have a lot to say, but my weakness is that I don’t know how to properly communicate or express myself. I have a lot of energy but I struggle with channeling it into something productive.
What are you hoping to learn or get better at this semester? – This semester, I hope to learn how to express myself through writing, and become stronger at reading comprehension.
Lagniappe – I can play 9 instruments! I love being in bodies of water, but I don’t know how to swim. Some day I’d like to live in a houseboat.

What do you like to do outside of schoolwork? What do you like about that?
I love anime and games, those things take me out of reality.

I like the fact that I can just roll out of bed and be in class. I’m not particularly a fan of having my camera on because i like my privacy, especially in my home.
What do you like about writing/English classes? What do you hate?
I’ve been told I have a way with words so I like to share that with others in English class. The only thing I can say I hate about English are the essays.
What is your favorite book or the best book you’ve read recently? What do you like about it?
My favorite book would have to be either Hate List by Jennifer Brown or A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer. I like both because they contain rather dark themes which intrigue me way more than lighthearted reads.
What are your strengths as a writer? What are your weaknesses?
My strength as a writer is that I’m very articulate. I’m weak in terms of not being able to focus when I’m writing, I’m also a slow writer because of this.
What are you hoping to learn or get better at this semester?
I’m hoping to expand my vocabulary!

I am not a guy that can sit around and type and stuff so that’s why I don’t do to good in school I am to active.
What do you like to do outside of schoolwork? What do you like about that?
I like to play games like overwatch and rainbow six siege or rust.
I like going outside during the day time to play basketball.

What do you like about online classes? What do you hate?

I don’t mind online classes but sometimes it hard when the teacher is not right there to answer your questions.
I don’t hate English but its a very hard language to master, my first language is English but I still can say my grammar sucks and still very bad at it.
I can proudly say I REALLy hate math because when it gets to math, I just turn into a slow learner and it very hard to me.

Lagniappe <– this is my favorite word. It means a little extra thing that you get for free when you buy something else. The thirteenth donut in a baker’s dozen, for instance. I love to read on my own personal time, go to museums, and walk my dogs. I try to keep myself busy as possible as I despise boredom. I’m working on being on my phone less. I’ve always loved reading but for a few years I felt I didn’t have time for it. Since quarantine gave me all the time in the world, I reread all my favorite childhood books. With all the museums closed over quarantine, I haven’t done much of this lately. I love studying art and my favorite museum is the Met. My dogs are the best and I adore them. They don’t always like to walk but they’re small enough to go into a bag, so I just carry them.
I have never taken an online class until this semester. I haven’t had enough experience with it to form an opinion yet. I will see by the end of the semester how I feel about it.
I as I said earlier, I love reading, of course it would be my favorite part of English class. However, writing is really intimidating to me and makes me feel extremely overwhelmed. I’m striving to not procrastinate to the point where I feel even more anxious about it then I already do.
My favorite book of all time is hard to choose. Battle Royale by Koushun Takami is my favorite book I read recently. It was written in 1996 in Japan and has been banned a few times for it adult themes and graphic descriptions. The book is Hunger Games but if it wasn’t a young adult novel. The themes of totalitarian government and what are teenagers capable of if told to survive always make a dynamic and interesting read.
I am a thorough writer, and I am detailed oriented, but I struggle with structure and using more advanced vocabulary.
I am hoping to become a better writer this semester and understanding poetry. My friends have been trying to get me into poetry for a while, I just can’t seem to find my niche yet.
Another little extra piece about me is, I love to work. I work with a multimedia artist in Tribeca. She was originally a tattoo artist, but she is currently expanding on different art forms. I am apprenticing as a tattoo artist, which is such a fun experience, but a little bit scary.

What i like about the book though i haven’t finished, is that it is very raw and honest, and it dwells in a lot of the topics that speak for the current conditions of Black people, and specifically Africa as a hole.
