Hi guys,
While reading and trying to find a part of the chorus that would make me feel any sort of emotional response or that I would feel a connection with. I realized that most of them do have what I was looking for.
To pick one, line 180, right there, from the very beginning of the first phrase to the end of the strophe. Wow!
I think it is a perfect example of all the elements that would consider these words poetry. Working together not only sounds beautiful but also has a super heavy emotional connotation that, if I had to define it in one word. I would say it is very human.
The rhythm of it and the strong images of tears and gods, they remind me of singing prayers…

CHORUS:
Strophe
What is the sweet spoken word of God from the shrine of
Pytho rich in gold
that has come to glorious Thebes?
I am stretched on the rack of doubt, and terror and
trembling hold
my heart, O Delian Healer,13 and I worship full of fears
185 for what doom you will bring to pass, new or renewed
in the revolving years.
Speak to me, immortal voice,
child of golden Hope.
– From Oedipus king
Francisco, this is a great ode, but where is your interpretation/discussion of it? Also, please include your name in the discussion title. Thanks!
Good afternoon, Francisco! I agree that the chorus uses incredibly emotive language throughout Oedipus the King. From the Strophe section that you chose to explore, my favorite part was lines 182 through 184, which read, “I am stretched on the rack of doubt, and terror and trembling hold my heart.” I feel that the words the author selected here effectively depict the vulnerability and rawness the chorus experience — that which you described as “very human.”
Francisco, I see what happened here. You posted your message to the group and then submitted the rest of your post as a comment. The quotes from the play should be with your original post, okay? Comments are meant for remarks to others in the group.
understood. thank you.
