In the book The House on Mango Street the vignette is “Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark” is about how Sandra thinks of her father who wakes up early to go to work every day and how would she feel if her father were to pass away like her grand father. She sees how her fathers cries when he says that her grandfather passed away. She realized how her father cries and wonders if that would be her one day when her father passes away crying but then needing to be strong for the rest of her family.
The way I relate to this vignette because I come from an immigrant family and growing up as the oldest in my family I had seen many times the time in which my father would wake up to go to work and some nights I would not be able to stay awake to see him come home. When my grandfather passed away I did not see him cry at all but he sat me down to tell me the news first before my brothers. In that moment I had asked my father If he had cried and he answered just a little. I asked him why he does not cry anymore for his father and he responded that he need to be the clear headed one and that he would tell the news to his brothers and sisters, making it seem that he need to be strong for them.

I definitely agree with this notion itself. I can relate to this because too many times especially as a man in families with ethnic backgrounds there’s a need to display a sort of strength. We see this only during times of anger or sadness. This could be due to the fact of not displaying weakness to their kids however, I believe otherwise. I believe that most of the times they weren’t taught how to display those emotions.
I agree with that.
