As the saying goes “what is done in the dark, will come to light”. That’s what the tragedy of Oedipus the king embodies. The timeless human experience and behaviors evident here are acts of betrayal and forgoing the elders’ warnings. Jocasta knew of the ill fate that was set out for Oedipus, but she knowingly withheld that from him. She is as guilty as Oedipus for Laius’s death, that’s why she decided to take her own life. Throughout the history of man, whether prophets or wise elders speak on future events most don’t listen. If Oedipus was killed when hearing of his fate it wouldn’t have come to pass. But again Jocasta went against the fate of Apollo, by passing off Oedipus to the herdsman. Another behavior is the fall of the powerful. Oedipus was a king of Thebes, so this happening to him had greater consequences. But he was a commoner, would he have lost so much?

I agree with the acts of betrayal that went on in the story. The fact that he chose not to listen to what the older people were telling him, once the truth was revealed it led him and everyone dear to him to their downfalls too.
