Lines 211-215 “There is no clash of brazen shields … deny the stranger safe anchorage”, is saying that there is no fight with one another, the fight is with Ares, a god of war. Here, the people of the city are blaming Ares for the “curse” that is currently upon them. They are in a sense condemning Ares out of their city and into the palace of Amphitrite; wishing no way out for him, maybe thinking this would put a stop to their current troubles. Within this Strophe, Lines 211-220, we see perfect examples of metaphors and maybe even a little bit of personification, in reference to the sea. “Where the waves of the Thracian Sea deny the stranger safe anchorage”.

Hi Imani, I like how you analyze the lines from the play. If Ares the god of war is to be the cause of the plague, is that why the people of Thebes are calling on Athena? Since she as well is the goddess of war and strategy. Maybe she’s the only one strong enough to defeat Ares. When you reference line 215 ” Where the waves of the Thracian Sea deny the strange safe anchorage”. Could the people of Thebes ask that the war God Ares be cast into the violence of the seas, since he’s the one causing such violent atrocities?
