‘Araby,’ is a short story by James Joyce. It is a story set in Ireland about a young boy in his preteens that fell in love or had somewhat of an obsession towards a girl who lives across the street from him who happened to be his friend’s sister. The young girl mentions how badly she wants to attend the bazaar, that he sees an opportunity to win her heart by attending the bazaar himself and bringing her back a gift. He gets to the bazaar late and was absolutely gutted, disappointed and felt helpless as all he could think was how he wasn’t able to fulfill his quest. He continued on feeling defeated, he couldn’t think of anything else besides his friend Mangan’s sister, he was having fantasies and dreams about her and soon later he realized he didn’t need to quantify love, get love or show love through gifts. He also somewhat knew that he wouldn’t have a real relationship with her.
