Natia Pachuashvili, Discussion 2

“Truly Zeus and Apollo are wise and inhuman things all-knowing; 580, but amongst men, there is no distinct judgment, between the prophet and me—which of us is right. One man may pass another in wisdom, but I would never agree 585 with those that find fault with the king till I should see the word proved right beyond doubt. For once in visible form, the Sphinx came on him, and all of us 590 saw his wisdom, and in that test, he saved the city. So he will not be condemned by my mind.” (Chorus)

In classic Greek drama and tragedy, the team responds and comments on the play’s actions and story. The group aims to demonstrate the usual attitude about what is happening, clarify the actions, as well as to evaluate the feelings of certain characters, and unite the play as a whole.

In this passage, Chorus talks about the accusation to Odepous by Teiresias about the previous king’s murder.  Chorus says, Whoever is the murder, there is no way to escape. They don’t believe that Odepous killed the King, but they can’t deny it because they don’t have evidence. In addition, Another reason why Chorus does not think that Oedipus killed the king, the city, and his people threw into great distress is that earlier Oedipus helped his people and saved them from trouble. Moreover, Oedipus tries to do everything in his power to achieve the goal of restoring order in the damaged city.
