I chose to complete the poem, “How Do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, by taking what the writer had started and using it to fashion what they intended the ending to be. This poem is a passionate love letter to her husband where she expresses her feelings fully and without hesitation in a timeless way. In “How to Read a poem”, it is stated that to complete a poem, one needs to be imaginative, ask questions and look for literary devices within the piece. “I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.” (Browning, lines 5-7) Through observing Browning’s use of narration, repetition, and metaphor, as well as applying it to my own experiences, I was able to picture the commitment and love that she had felt for her husband, that it was not just lust or puppy love, but a peaceful and strong connection she shared with him.
