In Langston Hughes’s work, “Salvation”, prior to attending the church revival, young Langston listened to his auntie’s words and held his belief in “God coming to his life through this magical connection with God” as he expected to be saved from sin. Yet, it did not actually happen to young Langston when he self-explored it in the church at age 12. During revival service, young Langston was uncertain of things he ought to have in the opposite way because he did not see God come to his life as anticipated and he attempted to resolve this contradiction by seating on the bench, awaiting longer to know if it can overturn eventually. It also dictates how an adult’s magic notion of religious conviction is interpreted in a child’s mind. The plot with the appearance of his friend, Wesley leaving from him implies a trigger to challenge his belief in actual realization of God into him during this meeting, because Langston didn’t believe his naughty friend, Wesley would be able to see God to be saved from sin more than him and Wesley’s behavior was not more convinced, but perceived a lie to him. It seems to implicitly discover the truth between faith and religion as to whether everyone was faking, or simply Wesley’s lying or perhaps Langston just did not have same experience as others with the audience. At the last paragraph, the influence of peer pressure made young Langton act opposite to come forward, even though he did not have same spiritual experience as what he expected before the revival service. Young Langston’s under pressure to do the same thing like anyone else in the group to convince everyone he’s saved from sin, which he found himself a morally deceitful person and thereby lost faith in God.

Nicole, I think that your closing sentence really summed up the idea of “Salvation”. The pressure that young Langston experienced during the revival from his peers and elders of the church that was supposed to push him towards accepting Jesus into his heart actually pushed him in the exact opposite directions and caused him to completely lose faith all together. The type of irony in “Salvation” is the kind that feels like such a let down at the end of the story because Langston is the type of character you root for. It’s sad that the pressure to experience something that should be meaningful to individuals was ruined by religious members telling children it must be experienced a specific way in order to be validated. Great post!
The strain that enthusiastic Langston experienced during the recovery from his associates and seniors of the collection that should drive him towards suffering Jesus into his heart genuinely pushed him in the specific in reverse headings and made him totally lose sureness all together.
