I believe that text should be ket in their authentic language for historical context. There should differently be an age limit and the context needs to be label with the age limit. Adults and student in college should have the maturity to understand the reason why some authors need to have that type of language. It can help us understand historic experiance people have faced and the impact it has. It not easy to hear and if you can’t listen or read it then I think that’s also okay and they should have the right to explain why they don’t feel comfortable to hear a story that have slurs. Students in high school still struggle with hearing racial slurs and it can affect how they feel.

I would rate my reading in poems a 5/10, I have always struggled with poems. I always need to re-read it, especially if the poems are complex and have strong vocabulary words that I don’t understand. It helps when there is a definition of the word on the bottom of the page. If not I need to find the definition and re read the poem again. Something that has boosted my confidence in reading poems is in class when it’s read aloud and it’s discussed. I am still not fully confident in reading poems but I have been doing much better in reading between the lines and having an understanding of the overall message of the poems. For example While reading “The Last Duchess” I felt more confidents I only had to read it twice and I was able to have an understanding.
I have always had a love for poetry and a special love for the story of Oedipus it was one of the first plays i read in high school . After the 2 weeks of poetry with professor Conway I have learned to interpret poetry on a much deeper level . In poetry you have to go through each line to find the hidden meanings of the authors words . I have learned to never read poetry at face value and dig deeper . This time around as we read Oedipus in class I think I will be able to fully grasp the gravity of the situation Oedipus finds himself in and not just read this story like lines on a paper but create a movie in my head with all the characters involved. The poem the mother by gwendolyn brooks is the poem that resonates with me in regards to Oedipus . I say this because from what we have read so far the city that Oedipus rules is currently dealing with a plague that is affecting mothers . The mothers in the city are mourning their children and death consumes them , as with the mother in the poem . Although one mothers child was taken by a plague and the other by the mothers choices no one pain amounts to another ,
In Essay one I learned my mistakes from my feedback because writing an essay has been a while. Also in my fall semester in English 101 I had the same essay problems. One of them is writing present tense, vocabulary and unclear sentences. Learning my mistakes are being repetitive I was gladly to learn from my mistakes and I’m planning to go to the writing center to learn and better my writing. One thing about my writing I share my writing and reading the feedbacks from my professors. Reading the feedbacks makes me want to write more into my writing and making it more interesting. Learning more about literature makes want to improve into my writing and vocabulary, so one thing I started doing is reading and words I don’t understand I write in a notebook. Afterwards, writing the words I understand the words to make the reading easier for I to understand the reading. Applying dictionary and reading into my literature makes me want to to write poetry. Poetry is beautiful way to express within oneself emotions.
During Essay 1 , I learned many valuable lessons I am not afraid to be honest and say sometimes as college students life can get the best of us which can dictate how efficiently we perform in class . During the writing of essay 1 I did not follow any directions which led me to get a failing grade luckily our professor has allowed us to revise . Following directions all the way through and make sure you are reading to understand not just to read. I learned to take my time and never go without taking notes of the stories we read in class . When we read articles given by the teacher its important to fully understand the message of what the author is trying to convey even if we are reading a student written essay we must fully grasp what the author is saying to us . I also realized how easy it is to fail by not sticking to the prompt given to us . Its important not to steer off the directions . I also have problems with writing the works cited pages so I would like to focus more on my essay organization skills . Another issue I have is when I write the words can become a little conversational and I need to work on articulating my thoughts onto paper .
In my experience with Essay 1, I kinda did struggle because I didn’t know if I was understanding the instructions correctly. I still have not gotten graded for my first essay so I don’t really know how I did. I did learn from a teacher perspective that it’s hard to follow an essay if it’s not organize. Something I did learn was how important it is to follow the instructions. The instructions are like the outline of the essay and making sure you are checking each point really does help to see what you miss and keep the essay organize. This is something I never really put much attention to and because of that I also struggled in how to start an essay. Something else I learned is how to make a proper thesis and the importance it has when making an essay and why it should not be a statement.
In “The lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara it shows more than the socio-economic issues. The story shows how Sylvia’s inner feelings impact her in a way she didn’t expect and how she comes to a realization. Throughout the story we can see her anger by the way she talks. Sylvia says “What I want to know is,” I says to Miss Moore though I never talk to her, I wouldn’t give the bitch that satisfaction”. Sylvia has a defiant attitude because she struggles with her pride. Her attitude is shown more to Miss Moore who is trying to teach them a lesson. She starts feeling emotions like shame and shyness and this frustrates her. She questions why she feels like this and at the end she came to a realization and her anger was now towards a determination that nothing will stop her. I good title for an essay can be “Sylvia inner realization to the lesson”
I have appeciated reading the stories in class and the discussions and meanings we have what the literature reading means and habe enjoyed hearing the different opinions of how the reading effects the students in the class and what the interpetation is. i have i mention that in reading these stories and participating; I am nervoud about the MLA writing format. I did miss my tutor session yesterday due to a emergency involving thr police and I really needed the extra support of that tututoring. I do find that your teaching style seems to be unique in setting us, the students up for success. I have struggled with learning how to use this platform and when to respond to the discussions. I hope as time goes on I can become a stronger wrtier and comprehend the expectations of the class and assignements. I may over share with my discussions but that is part of who I am and I feel it gives me a chance for honest feedback. I am sorry my discussion post is late as I’ve been struggling and utilizing the accessibilty support is new to me and sometimes can be over whelming as it requires a lot of appointments. Please dont lose hope in me just yet as I have faith I will catch on.
The obvious lesson in the story “The lesson” by Toni Bambara is social inequalities but if you dig a little deeper you will see the character Sylvia undergo a mental transformation . In the start Sylvia is naive and unaware of anything outside of her immediate circumstances or surroundings . Not only does she lack self awareness but she is dismissive of her mentor Mrs Moore . During the trip she takes to FAO Shwartz accompanied by her peers and mentor she begins to realize the difference between her daily life and luxuries from those who can actually afford the items at this store . This shift in Sylvia’s perspective not only upsets her but you can see how this one event will shape her identity in the future . Another lesson I received by reading this story is with Mrs Moore , who refuses to become discouraged by the students lack of interest and instead pushes on through the story despite the resistance shown , ultimately getting her students to grasp the reality of their identities and circumstances. The lesson I took from Mrs Moore is resilience in the face of indifference .
My understanding of the prewriting assignment in Week 1 Activity 10 is that it gives you steps on what to do in Week 1. Students have to read the “The Most Handsome Drowned Man” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the “Overview of ‘The Most Handsome Drowned Man’” by Dean Rader. Once students have read those two they will have to review the supporting guides in Week 1 which is activities 5 through 8. Once that is done students will have to review the Sample Essay and that would be the last step. The purpose of the prewriting assignment is give students an understanding of what steps to take when it comes to writing an essay and also giving them a guide to help them on their essay because giving an sample essay really helps students see what they are going to write but in their own words as well as giving power points of how thesis is supposed to be written which also helps students when it comes to writing an essay.
In Activities 1 through 10, we will read The Handsomest Drowned Man by Gabriel García Márquez . Also by using BMCC’s literary library database to explore the life and works of the author and hopefully gain a deeper understanding of his life and work, by doing so we will explore his background and literary contributions and collect important facts that can help us deeper understand his life and motives of writing . Following this, we will analyze a secondary source by scholar Dean Rader, who provides an interpretation of the story. Additionally, we will study the distinction between primary and secondary sources and complete a short quiz to test our understanding. This prewriting assignment will lay the foundation for our thesis-based essay. However, for now, our focus is solely on reading and preparation.
