I feel like the authentic language should be kept in the interest of the historical context and characterization. As a person of color myself. I feel as though America has watered down the racism and all instances of it from back in the days so i think it really should stay and not be blocked off as just a common bad word but people, us reader, we should be reminded of the offence and origins of such a slur especially fora story like this one, because if you’re not familiar it’ll be very difficult to get how subtle some of the phrases are and can easily fly over our heads even in todays perspective where there’s a lot of micro aggression. Simply censoring the words is not enough; we should be reminded of America’s history, especially in the context of “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, where the granny really can’t see anything wrong with her way of thinking, because that is the reality of America.

I definitely agree with your post. In a culture where everything has been “white washed” it’s extremely important to show true americas history. In “A Good Man Is Hard To Find”, it would have been extremely easy to overlook the phrase when the grandmother was speaking on the young child having no pants. Discriminatory things like that, I feel are important to keep within the story in order for today’s readers to know how deep it really goes and how horrible the true American history is. I believe that if you don’t know your history it’s doomed to repeat itself.
I agree with you that keeping the original language is important for understanding the story’s historical context and characters. Censoring the offensive language can take away from the message of the story. Even in A Good Man is Hard to Find. The way the grandmother doesn’t see anything wrong with her racist thoughts shows how deeply racism was ingrained in society at the time. By keeping the harsh language, readers can get a better understanding about the subtle racism in the story, which still exists in today’s world. Removing the language would make it harder to see the connection between the past and the present.
